AC72's, Dragons, Kieler Woche and more...

Aerials 2 Boats Testing / SFO June Testing Session / ORACLE TEAM USA / San Francisco (USA)
Oracle Team USA sailed their two AC72's on San Francisco Bay today, in the start of a two week testing program.

Both of the team’s AC72 racing yachts spent the morning running through various tests and boat set-ups as they maneuvered around the San Francisco Bay.

'It was the best day of the campaign,' said skipper Jimmy Spithill. 'It has taken a lot of work and a lot of energy to get two full crews up to this level, to operationally get to this level, to launch and have two boats ready to go. A lot of credit goes to the shore and build teams.

'Now, we have two competitive boats,' Spithill continued. 'That’s a good position to be in as you never know what’s around the corner. For us to have two boats, with two race wings, and have a lot of depth in our sailing team, it certainly gives us a chance to produce more boat speed. And, from a racing point of view, it allows us to really learn the race track and build a playbook.'

John Navas was bayside and captured the action. Longer video available later in the day. Sail-World will be interviewing Jimmy in a few hours times, so we will have much more indepth news tomorrow.

2013 Dragon Edinburgh Cup day 2

The South Coast Championship got off to a great but slightly delayed start at the International Dragon fleet's week long festival of sailing in Weymouth. Originally scheduled to be sailed over two days, strong winds on Sunday had forced the Race Committee to keep the boats in harbor. Fortunately on Monday the weather gods were smiling and the 37 strong fleet enjoyed three tightly fought races in shifty westerly winds of 15-20 knots.

With the South Coast Championship completed the fleet now moves into the Edinburgh Cup, for the open British Championship. The opening day ably demonstrated that the Corinthian, all-amateur, teams are more than capable of giving the professionals a run for their money. Now with four of a possible six races now completed, reigning Dragon World Champion Lawrie Smith, crewed by Ossie Stewart and Tim Tavinor, has moved into the lead in Weymouth.

2013 RC44 Sweden Cup - John Bassadone at the helm of Peninsula Petroleum (GBR 1)

On the opening day of fleet racing at the RC44 Sweden Cup, tricky conditions saw no one team able to finish in the top half of the leaderboard in all three races. There were race wins for Team Italia, Artemis Racing and Team Aqua, but the most consistent performers of the day were John Bassadone and Vasco Vascotto onboard Peninsula Petroleum. The Gibraltar based team scored two seconds and a seventh to take a two point overnight lead over Artemis Racing. Racing continues in Marstrand until Saturday 29th June. Stay tuned for daily reports.

2013 ORCi World Championship - Offshore race

We have some great photos from the offshore race held in Ancona, Italy, taken on site by photographer Max Ranchi.

Great Britain gained three gold medals and Germany claimed three with Spain, Austria and Finland claiming once each. For the finish of the Olympic classes, Philipp Buhl (Sonthofen) defended his title in the Laser and relegated the two-time Olympic winner Robert Scheidt (Brazil) and Jesper Staelheim (Sweden) to the fringe.
