Aussies take lead at 29er Worlds qualifiers

29er Fleet, Melbourne Worlds 2008

Despite a tough day on the water at the 29er Worlds in Melbourne, three British teams remain in the top five after the 20 knot southerly conditions put many upside down. Bleddyn Mon and Tom Humphreys ahd a first and second to move into fifth, while Max Richardson and Alex Groves had a seond and fourth to go third.

Most to suffer in the fresh conditions were early series leaders, James Peters and Ed Fitzgerald who finished with fifth and 12th places and in fourth overall.

Steven Thomas and Jasper Warren (AUS) today regained their lead of the 29er World Championship being sailed of Sorrento, thriving in the tough 20 knot southerly conditions, whilst many others spent most of the race upside down in the water.

Two victories, in Races 8 and 9 bumped the pair back to the top of the board, but the Danish crew of Henrik Sogaard and Soren Kristensen are in hot contention with a win and a third place today, which moved them up from third to second place and just two points adrift of the leaders.

Peters and Fitzgerald were masters of the light airs of yesterday, but could not quite come to grips with the typically Victorian strong winds at this time of year. Although they did relatively well, with fifth and 12th places, it was not enough to keep them in a podium place.

However, the three British teams are only six points off the lead at the end of the qualifying rounds. Tomorrow the fleets will be divided into Gold, Silver, Bronze and Amber groups. The Gold fleet will sail off over the next three days to find a new world champion, as the Argentinean defending champions did not come to this event.

Two Italian crews, Riccardo Camin and Giacomo Grosselli (16 and 14 years old) and Videsott Pierluigi and Franceschini Lorenzo (21 and 16) are not used to such conditions as they saw today. Camin saying: 'It is hard conditions. It is easy to sail in Italy compared to here.'

Pierluigi agreed: 'I like less wind. Today we have broken equipment. Was very hard. We found the big fleet a challenge.'

The 29er World Championship is an ISAF Grade 1 Sail Melbourne event hosted by Sorrento Couta Sailing Club. The Final series starts tomorrow at 10.00am and finishes on Wednesday afternoon.
