Delta Lloyd North Sea Regatta adds Cruising Class for 2011

As of 2011, recreational sailors can participate in the offshores of the Delta Lloyd North Sea Regatta.

They start from Scheveningen/Netherlands in their own cruising class, where performance counts and not really the result. This way they can make their Channel crossing together with fellow cruisers as part of the traditional Vuurschepenrace, starting on Tuesday May 31, 2011.

'The level of race teams is rising. We found that the recreational teams dropped out a bit, although they like to sail across the North Sea mutually. We find it important to keep this group of sailors on board of our event. That is the reason why we introduce the cruising class', said organizer Frans Sluyters.

The annual Delta Lloyd North Sea Regatta always commences with the Vuurschepenrace along the Scheveningen coast. From a tug of the Royal Dutch Navy the Municipal Councillor for Sports in The Hague, Karsten Klein, will fire the gun. Then the crews take up the challenge of 110 nautical miles towards Harwich in England. In Woolverstone a warm welcome by the members of the Royal Harwich Yacht Club awaits the sailors. On Ascension Day, they will enjoy the now traditional lunch in the ancient pub of smugglers 'Butt and Oyster' at Pin Mill. The cruise participants can return on their own back to their home club in the Netherlands.

All yachts can be followed live on the website here by a tracing and tracking devices.

On Tuesday May 31, the starting gun of the 110-mile Vuurschepenrace from Scheveningen to Harwich will be fired. This is the first race of the Delta Lloyd North Sea Regatta. After a lay day in Harwich, the IRC and ORC classes sail the R.O.R.C. North Sea Race back to Scheveningen on Friday June 3. During the Whitsun weekend, from June 10 until June 13, more than 500 boats compete in the inshore races before the Coast of Scheveningen. Several disciplines participate: big yachts, current and former Olympic classes, one-design classes, catamarans and open boats.
