2013 Detroit cup winners
Isao Toyama.
Team Gilmour has won the Detroit Cup! The boys are so happy to have taken the win at one of the most friendly yacht clubs in th world.

It has been a long and slow regatta for us, we competed our quarter final on Friday against Chris Poole and his Riptide Racing Team from Maine, which meant that Saturday was a slow day for us watching the other quarter finals and consultation rounds. We sat around for the whole day thinking we would get the opportunity to do some of our semi final series, but the wind died and the days racing was finished with the semis & finals to be completed on the final day

As the top qualifier we had the option to choose our opponent for the semi finals, we decided to race Matt Graham, the young local skipper fresh out of college. Graham was very fast in the Ulitmate 20s but we were able to dispose of him in straight sets (3-0) and advance to the Finals.

In the other semi finals Chris Steele from Auckland, New Zealand beat local team skippered by Chris Van-tol also in three races

The finals were set to be the same old Aussie vs Kiwi clash and having raced Steele and his team before we knew it was going to be tough. With the starts being the key to race wins we were able to put a few great races together minus on mishap where we started the wrong side of the pin mark and found ourselves 2-1 up. With the wind picking up to 15 knots for our first match point race the crews boat handling really became important and after a really close prestart we came off the line in a very controlling position and were able to hold the lead and surf down the last downwind to claim our third win of the finals and our first win of The Detroit Cup.

It was a must win event to keep us in the running for the overall US grand slam tour. Our next event is the prestigious Knickerbocker Cup at Manhasset Bay Yacht Club, in Long Island, New York in the Swedish Match 40's and then to Oakcliff for the final event of the grand slam.
