The first European Youth Sailing Games are being held on Trentino Garda, Italy. The official opening took place on Sunday evening with teams and flags representing all the 21 nations taking part.

Day one of the first edition of the European Youth Sailing Games got under way with winds from the north caused by the thunderstorms earlier in the morning, which fortunately didn't hamper the inauguration of the event organized by Fraglia Vela Riva in collaboration with Eurosaf.

After the morning storms the weather conditions improved enough to hold four legs for the 29er, three for the Byte M and F and two for the Techno 293 board (the course was reduced on the second race due to a drop in wind which fell to eight to ten knots from 18).

So far the biggest battles for the lead are in the skiff 29er class and the Techno M (the top five contenders are three points within each other), but of course is still early days and with four days of competition remaining, anything can happen.

The weather forecast for the next four days looks good and should bring the classic southerly wind which usually blows around 14-18 knots.

Techno 293 M
27 participants, 10 nations

There are six countries in the top 10 with Martin of G.B. (World under 17 Techno Champion 2011), in the lead by one point (1-4 partials ) over Zagainov of Russia (4-2) equal with Javadav of Belarus (3-3). Michele Cittadini of Italy (Windsurfing Club Cagliari), is lying in fourth place only two points behind the leader. He took a good partial first in the second race after a sixth in the first.

Techno 293 W
17 participants, seven nations

Even here the competition is fierce with World Champion Marta Maggetti of Italy (Windsurfing Club Cagliari) battling it out with British sisters Saskia and Imogen Sills (first and third respectively in the under 17 World Techno Championships held recently in San Francisco). Maggetti got off to a flying start showing her form straight away and with two firsts has a five point lead over Imogen Sills (4-3). Elfutin of Belarus is third (6-2), but Saskia Sills (first in the San Francisco championships) looks ready to attack. At the moment she's lying in sixth place with a third and 13th.

Byte CII M
Seven participants, five nations

Even though there is a low number of participants in this category, the level is high. Michele Benamati of Italy (Fraglia Vela Riva), is in the lead after achieving three victories. Guldberg of Denmark is six points behind (4-2-3).
Zelko of Slovenia (5-4-2) is in third place but is equal on points with Sheludyakov of Russia (3-3-5).

Byte CII W
Nine participants, six nations

Beher of Denmark got off to a strong start with three wins. New World Laser Champion Cecilia Zorzi (Fraglia Vela Riva), is second(4-3-2). Fellow Italian Joice Floridia (Fraglia Vela Riva) is third (6-2-3).

29er Open
24 boats participants (x2), seven nations

Six Countries are in the top 10. The British team of Payne-Berry are in the lead. After two eighths they took a first and a second to give them a five point lead over Piasescka Sara-Kalinowski of Poland (13th in the recent European Championships). After taking a first and third, they dropped to a 15th but quickly recovered in the last race to take a fifth.

Two points behind and in third place is the Danish team of Stephensen-Thusgaard who also started well in the first two races (2-4), but only took a 13th in the third race and a seventh in the fourth. Showing steady form is the other British team of Hawkins-Thomas in fourth place. Ruskola-Cedercreuts of Finland continued to improve as the day went on (14-12-4 and then a first in the final race).

European and World Champions Robles-Trittel are 10th at the moment (20-1-16-3).
