ISAF Sailing World Championships - 49er Worlds head for 'Success'

49er Worlds - ISAF Sailing World Championships Perth 2011
The 49er Worlds are underway as part of the ISAF Sailing World Championships in Perth, Australia. On their fifth day competing and with only a single race each in the newly split Gold, Silver, and Bronze fleets, the sailors are headed for the Success course for a quick day’s racing in thirteen knot breezes.

First up was the gold fleet and Emil and Simon Toft Nielsen (DEN) made their presence known by rounding the first mark and giving the regatta leaders a run for their money. Battling their way around it was a tight match between the Danes and John Pink/Rick Peacock (GBR) until Peter Burling and Blair Tuke (NZL) slipped by at the first leeward gate.

But the Danes battled back and took the only gun of the day moving them to second overall with Pink/Peacock settling for second and Burling/Tuke crossing in third.

The silver fleet then ran their 30 minute sprint led first by another brother pair, this time the Spanish duo of Carlos and Anton Paz. But the second upwind caught them off guard and Thomas Zajac and Thomas Czajka (AUT) passed and led to the finish. Bronze was won wire-to-wire by Andre Fonseca and Marco Grael (BRA).

Overall leaders now stand at:

Gold: John Pink and Rick Peacock GBR
Silver: Thomas Zajac and thomas Czajka AUT
Bronze: Dionisios Dimou and Michail Pateniotis GRE

Three races will be sailed tomorrow with the gold fleet starting at 9:00am on Centre course and Silver and Bronze on Owen course.
