Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mapfre organisation celebrating - ISAF Sailing World Cup 2013
The Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mapfre organisation celebrated this afternoon, at the Barcelona International Boat Show, after the announcement of its inclusion in the new Olympic classes world sailing circuit to start in 2013.

Only two European events have been selected and the Sofia is one of them with its 43rd edition to be held in the bay of Palma the first week of April 2012.

The members of the managing and organising team of the most international and largest event in Spain – it brings together every year over one thousand sailors representing more than 50 nations – have celebrated the announcement with cava at the Ports de les Illes Balears stand with Antonio Deudero, general manager of Ports and Airports of the Govern de les Illes Balears; José María Martín Puertas, vice-president of the Real Federación Española de Vela; Santiago Fiol, president of the Federación Balear de Vela; Gabriel Dolç, president of Club Nâutic S’Arenal and Emerico Fuster, vice-president of Real Club Náutico de Palma.

The absolute winner trophy of the Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mapfre, with the names of the absolute winners of the 42 editions held engraved on it, will be exhibited at the boat show to promote the event and spread 'the wonderful news for Spanish sailing of the selection of Mallorca as one of the two European venues of the new Sailing World Cup', as expressed by Deudero, who has stated 'the unconditional political support of Ports de les Illes Balears' to the organisation'.

'The truth is we have worked very hard to achieve this,' commented Ferran Muniesa, the Sofia Mapfre Chief Executive Officer. 'It has been a fierce competition against strong rivals so we are very happy with the news and also very grateful for all the support received through the website'.

Over 2,000 persons have signed on the Sofia Mapfre webpage to support the bid.

The site also shows several interviews with sailors, technical staff, coaches and media professionals who have praised the organisation of the Mallorcan regatta. 'It is, undoubtedly, one of the best events in the world,' declared British sailor, the nine times world champion and a record of four Olympic medals.

'It is a very good organisation and the weather conditions provide excellent racing'. On the other hand, prestigious British reporter Richard Langdon, the official photographer of the 2011 ISAF World Cup Sailing Championships, declared: 'The Sofia is my favourite event in the current Sailing World Cup'.

Rudy Fernández, Iker Martínez and Marina Alabau are other athletes that have expressed their satisfaction with the Balearic event. (Read their opinions and check full interviews online).

'We have chosen this day to celebrate the news with the Spanish sailing family at the Barcelona International Boat Show but on Monday we will be back to work to make possible all the points presented in the bid document', added Pepe Cazador and Joan Calafat, technical director and internet and new technologies manager, while they were going through the 176 page bid document that convinced ISAF to maintain Mallorca in the best Olympic classes circuit in the world.

The ISAF Sailing World Cup, which gathers together the world’s top Olympic sailors, was launched in December 2008 with a format of five European events, one in the Americas and one in Australia. In order to make it a more global concept, ISAF has presented a new circuit for 2013 and onwards with a total of six events to be held in Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa-Middle East and Oceania.

The main governing body of the sport of sailing announced last Saturday that the Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mapfre and the Semaine Olimpique Française, Hyères, were the two European events included in the 2013-14 ISAF Sailing World Cup – there will be a new bid process every two years and venues may vary. The other four events of the new circuit to be held in the Americas, Asia, Africa-Middle East and Oceania-will be announced shortly.

The Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mapre presented its bid under the slogan 'The sailors’ event' with a project focused on the excellent weather conditions for sailing in the bay of Palma, over four decades of organisation experience, the island’s tourism infrastructure and the fantastic transport network by air and by sea.
