Relocated from Bangtao in anticipation of the prolonged monsoon season, the second series was held over the past weekend at Cape Panwa in front of the 3rd Naval Command Center. Fresh gentle breeze greeted the fleet in a rather calm bay after a rain the night before. There were 5 Lasers and 16 Optimists competing in a light wind condition, a truly opposite to the condition in previous Series at Nai Yang last month.

After a weeklong advance Optimist clinic held by the sailing club of the 3rd Naval Command early this month, the result was clearly observed. A much improvement is seen from Phuket Fleet led by Nalinmas Nitsuwan for optimist Girl and Sumate Pandam for Optimist Boy. Seen in the combined fleet of boy and Girl was the tight competition between Nalinmas and Sumate who both finished 6 races with tied score at 8 points (after a discard of one worse race). It was Sumate who finished in the 1st place of the final race of the Series made his name moved up to the top of the overall score sheet.

Another battle was seen between Tritub Maneecharoen and Keeratika Klongboon who has a tied score of 24 but it was the last race that made the different when Tritub gained a better position in the last leg first cleared the finishing line.

The weekend results for Optimist Boy had Sumate from Phuket stand the podium followed by Charef from Songkhla with Tritub in the third position. In the Optimist Girl had Nalinmas Nitsuwan from Phuket claimed the victory over Silawan Jinda from Songkhla leaving the 3rd place to the former champ from previous Series, Keeratika from Phuket.

The Laser fleet had seen a new star from Phuket Surassawadee Sukpraw who gave hard time to the all times leader of the fleet, Chat Dawrueng. In the light wind condition which need extra skills and concentration, Chat still manage to retain his position throughout the first day race. The second day conditions has, however, been improved to make the game become a real battle field for Chat. An improved wind speed of 8-10 knots with clear blue sky made Pongpak and Surassawadee taking turn to get the line honor in the first 2 races where Chat only manage to find his way out in the 3rd race after a close neck beating. The combined results for all 6 races over two days still give Chat the 1st position followed by Pongpak and Surassawadee.

Phuket Dinghy Series is part of Phuket King’s Cup Regatta where the winner will be awarded the trophy at the Royal Award Ceremony at Kata Beach Resort and Spa on December 6, 2013 together with winners from the international fleet of keelboats, ocean multihull, dinghies, and windsurf. The pre event series race has now entered its 4thsuccessful year and is sponsored by PTT Global Chemical. The race helps inspire many young talents in Phuket and other Southern provinces into the sailing sport, one of the most environmental friendly activity popular in most countries with seashore. The final series will be held at Cape Panwa over the weekend of November 23-24, a week prior to the Phuket Kin g’s Cup Regatta which will be held off Kata beach during November 30 to December 6.
