A mix of Skandia Team GBR’s young guns and seasoned campaigners topped the standings this weekend as the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) staged the final installment of the RYA Olympic Classes National Ranking Series 2012 over the 13th-14th October.

After witnessing some strong battles across all classes on the first weekend event in September, this second event showcased some competitive and exciting racing with 12- 16 knots on Saturday and a lighter 8-10 knots on Sunday.

In the Men’s 470 class, Skandia Team GBR Development Squad members Mike Wood and Hugh Brayshaw picked up from where they left off from the opening weekend as they continued to fight off strong competition from two-time Olympic silver medallist Nick Rogers, who was this weekend competing with Richard Mason.

Three race wins across the six race series this weekend was enough to give the 470 Junior European silver medallists Wood and Brayshaw their first National Ranking Series crown. Rogers and Mason finished the weekend in third overall, four points off the top spot and three points behind Joanna Freeman and Katie Tomsett. The new kids on the block, Craig Dibb and Harry Derbyshire, who have only recently made the transition into the 470 dinghy, put in a strong performance finishing the 470 Men’s event in third overall.

In the Women’s fleet, Freeman and Tomsett demonstrated their ability to compete at the top of a mixed fleet as they clinched a race win in the final race of the series, giving them the overall event crown and second place in the weekend standings. Amy Seabright and Eilidh McIntyre entered the event in top spot, however were unable to hold off the charge of the eventual Series winners, resulting in second place overall. Anna Burnett and Flora Stewart finished third overall.

Event victory in the Finn class went to Mark Andrews who secured three seconds on day one followed by two bullets and a third on day two. Giles Scott dominated Saturday’s proceedings posting three bullets, but did not compete on the Sunday, giving overall event honours to Andrews with Pete McCoy in second and Harry Briddon in third.

In the 49er class, John Pink and Simon Wheeler stormed day one in the gusty conditions posting three race wins to cement their position at the top of the weekend leaderboard. Dylan Fletcher and Dave Evans sailed together on the Saturday due to illness and injury to their respective crews Alain Sign and Ed Powys.

Fletcher then resumed his partnership with Sign on the Sunday, sealing two race wins and a third to finish in second and clinch the National Ranker crown, overhauling Edd Clayson and Mark Asquith who entered the weekend on top. Clayson and Asquith finished second in the overall event standings while James Peters and Ed Fitzgerald rounded their series off in third.

Meanwhile in the 49er FX class, Frances Peters and Katrina Best entered the weekend in top spot after a strong performance in the opening event of the National Ranker. The pair, who have both made the transition from the Women’s 470 into the new Olympic class for 2016, continued their supremacy to be crowned National Ranking Series champions.

It was a family affair In the male and female Kiteboarding events, which was used as a test event for the RYA, as four time World Champion Steph Bridge and her son Oli Bridge, both fresh from making the podium at the recent World Championships in Cagliari, Italy, wrapped up both the weekend and the two-event series with impressive displays throughout.

Meanwhile, Oxford Sailing Club played host to the Paralympic 2.4mR class and it was Iain Stowe who came out on top by the narrowest of margins against Will Street who finished in second place on countback. Michael Cogswell finished the event in third, seven points behind the top two boats, who ended the event with seven points apiece.

Barrie Edgington, Skandia Team GBR Development Squad Manager, said: 'This weekend we saw some fantastic racing out on the Olympic waters with some challenging conditions. The performance of the weekend has to be new Skandia Team GBR Development Squad sailors, Mike Wood and Hugh Brayshaw, who put in a great performance to fight off double Olympic silver medallist Nick Rogers in the Men’s 470 event.

'The two new Olympic classes were a real success, given that this was the first event the RYA has run for the Kiteboarding and the women’s Skiff 49er FX class. We have certainly learnt a great deal from the experience and this should stand us in good stead for next year’s RYA events'

'Our thanks must also go to Oxford Sailing Club who took on the challenge of running the 2.4mR class at the very last minute.'
