The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania was founded in Hobart in 1880 and was known then as the Derwent Sailing Boat Club. In 1908, a petition to His Majesty King Edward VII resulted in the granting of a Royal Warrant in 1910 and a change of name to the present name of The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania.

From modest beginnings, the R.Y.C.T. is now one of the leading and largest yacht clubs in Australia.
