Vendée Globe 2012-13: EC6 rigging once again passes the ultimate test

Virbac Paprec 3 - 2012 Vendee Globe

EC6 bundled continuous carbon rigging has performed flawlessly for the third time during the iconic Vendée Globe round the world race.

Five of the top eight Open 60s which completed the 2012-13 Vendée Globe circumnavigation, including unofficial finisher Bernard Stamm, sported EC6 bundled carbon continuous side rigging from Composite Rigging and all five completed the marathon race without rigging issues.

After reconditioning, the EC6 rigging aboard Virbac-Paprec III skippered by Jean-Pierre Dick, Cheminees Poujoulat with Bernard Stamm, SynerCiel with Jean Le Cam, Gamesa with Mike Golding, who also took advantage of the flexibility of EC6 for his deflected backstays, and Mirabaud with Dominique Wavre will be ready to race again.

Southern Spars’ Composite Rigging manager Scott Vogel exclaimed that the team at Composite Rigging couldn’t be prouder of their association with these five top IMOCA 60 teams. Vogel noted that 'even though it sounds cliché the heroic efforts of Jean-Pierre Dick - who was the early adopter of the EC6 continuous technology six years ago on his first IMOCA - sailed the last 2,650 miles without a keel and still secured fourth place. Dick has now sailed three times around the world – over 75,000 miles – with the same set of EC6 rigging on his Southern Spars-rigged Virbac-Paprec III'.

'Bernard Stamm’s perseverance in bringing his boat home and the battle of the 50-somethings between Jean Le Cam, Mike Golding and Dominique Wavre …really is what legends are made of'.

Vogel adds 'We were delighted to hear from Mirabaud skipper Dominique Wavre that his first post-race rigging inspection showed absolutely no problems and that the EC6 looks like new'.

'It’s significant to note that our EC6 continuous carbon product was the only carbon rigging package to complete the race. EC6 bundled rods gives you that extra margin of safety and, together with the product’s vast and well-proven track record in numerous events, that makes the difference when you are looking for the ultimate reliability in carbon rod rigging. EC6 bundled carbon rigging provides strength in numbers – a single solid rod may break - but a bundle of rods stays strong.'

EC6 rigging is constructed from a bundle of small diameter pultruded carbon rods, which gives the cables high fatigue, impact and compression resistance.

'EC6 is also the only continuous carbon rigging product in Volvo Ocean Race that has not sustained serious rigging failure since carbon rigging has been allowed in the event,' Vogel adds, 'This level of performance and reliability has played a major part in Composite Rigging being selected as the rigging supplier with our EC6 continuous carbon product for the VO’65 One Design class for the next two editions of the race.'

Vogel says Southern Spars and Composite Rigging would also like to congratulate Giovanni Soldini and his crew aboard the Southern Spars-rigged Volvo Open 70 Maserati (formerly Ericsson 3) who set a new record sailing ‘The Golden Route’ from New York to San Francisco. After a lap around the world and many ocean crossings, the Southern Spars rig and EC6 rigging package on Maserati continues to stand up to the test.
