Yngling Gold again for Ayton, Webb and Wilson

2008 Yngling Worlds

Britain's Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson took a 26 point lead and a second World Title at the completion of the series racing at the Yngling World Championships - taking place in Miami, Florida.

The British Olympic choice for the 2008 Games finished the final day with a 4, 2 and 11 discard to double their lead and successfully defend their World title with a race to spare.

Wilson described the trio’s victory as “amazing – it hasn’t quite sunk in yet!” and admitted that they were fully fired up to defend their world title after missing out on the medals at the Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta at the same venue two weeks ago.

“Going into the OCR we hadn’t really raced since China, as we’d been working on a lot of equipment stuff,” the 22-year Lymington sailor explained. “We didn’t finish quite where we wanted to be at that event, which meant we were even more ready for the Worlds.”

Ayton and her crew will have the luxury of being able to sail without worry in the Medal race - the rules require them to sail and count the score.

The battle will be on for the silver and bronze places. The Australian crew of Krystal Weir, Karyn Gojnich and Angela Farrell have taken back second place with a five point advantage over Ulrike Schuemann, Julia Bleck and Ute Hoepfner of Germany.

Big winners today were Anne Le Helley, Catherine Lepesant and Julie Gerecht of France who won the first two races but did not make the top ten for the medal race.

The other winner was Ekaterina Skudina, Diana Krutskikh, and Natalia Ivanova of Russia, who won the final series race to go into the final in sixth.

Shirley Robertson made it into the medal race in tenth place
