On the eve of the most-anticipated Sanctuary Cove ever – its 20th anniversary show – welcome to another issue of Marine Business News.

This week, we cover the industry in all its minutia. We have a profile on Burke Marine, one of the biggest and most diverse accessories distributors in the market and now well and truly global, a preview of the Gold Coast's hybrid-power ferry system, due to start next year – three years since the concept was first proposed to Council – and coverage of the inaugural Marine Industry Networking lunch, held at Southport Yacht Club last week

Speakers included sailing proponent and author, Rob Mundle, Maritimo Marketing Manager, Peter Jenkins and ‘Black Joe' Akacich, CEO of Viking – all of whom had plenty to say about the state of the industry, the challenges, its potential locally and opportunities abroad.

It is not all doom and gloom by any stretch, despite what you read in tomes like the GC Bulletin and The Australian. There are plenty of options for savvy marine companies and they require dedication and in most cases, a change to systems, processes and focus. ‘Black Joe' recommends taking advantage of the network provided by government and industry bodies to get your company's products and services to international markets, where there is no sign of a downturn, like Russia, Europe and some segments in the US.

Also this issue, a round up of the Kuwait Boat Show and list of a few others that are on the radar as far as AIMEX is concerned (how about the Moscow and Mumbai Boat Shows?), plus what's massive and impressive in WA in terms of investment in marine infrastructure for commercial, defense and recreational boating.

It's mild and sunny on the Gold Coast, as usual this time of year. As we anticipate a plethora of launches, records and world firsts, we welcome visitors to this great neck of the woods and hope the results of the Show stand as testament to a healthy, well-supported industry.
