Editorial: Hero Dog against Venezuelan Pirates

OOps! I thought Gremlins always hung around in sailing boats to make things go wrong just when you didn't need it, but last night some readers received a Marine Business Newsletter on a Cruising Newsletter header by mistake. Some Gremlins must have escaped out into our system. so sorry – did not mean to bore you with internal news meant for the marine business world.

Hero dog - shot and stabbed while protecting owners  .. .
Piracy is again in the news this week, with the focus shifting to the Caribbean, as a British couple were attacked and robbed on their way to Trinidad off the coast of Venezuela. It was the dog who proved the hero (pictured).

The Sydney International Boat Show is coming up, and Sail-World will be there in full strength at the sailing stage. The stage show will feature lots of personalities of the sailing world, Musto Fashion Parades, great videos and images of cruising, stories of the circumnavigators, even the two kayakers who paddles across the Tasman. I'll be there too, every day talking sailing, and I look forward to see you there. Read the programme below and put it in your diary now!

Going on a sailing holiday? Get smart with a packing guide that will have you enjoying your sailing – and your holiday buddies enjoying your company – much more.

Rallies are a great way to enjoy your cruising and have someone to share a sundowner with, not to mention the security of those daily scheds on the radio. There are two of them in the news, the Darwin to Ambon reborn rally that's gaining popularity rapidly, and Middle Harbour Yacht Club's Croatia Rally – couldn't join either? Then enjoy the stories....

In UK waters this week, there's a lot of unnecessary - and expensive - searching going on for sailors who didn't have a problem at all, one incident up Shetland way, the other in Hampshire....some interesting reading here, no matter which sea you sail. What do YOU think?

Have you, or do you know anyone who has ever collided with a whale while sailing? If so, marine scientists need your help.

Finally, Sydney-siders, Sturrock's Sale is on until July 31 - this is your chance to get a great bargain.

Lots more too, so read on, enjoy, and...

Sail safe!

Nancy Knudsen, Cruising Editor
