Pirates and premiums, Bar Crusher crushes competition, ethanol alert

Hope you all had a relaxing Easter break. Despite the rain, it was an absolute luxury to doddle about, eat chocolate to one's heart's content and regroup for another hectic few months ahead.

The Somali pirate drama unfolded on our TV screens, thanks to the involvement this time of a US ship, the Maersk Alabama and the ultimate conclusion of its Captain's rescue after military snipers picked off three of the pirates.

In an open letter to the world's media, the Somali have pirates vowed to target US and French ships to avenge the death of their five colleagues in recent attacks. “France and the U.S. will encounter unforgettable lessons,” Mohamed Hashi Yasin, a self-declared pirate spokesman, said by mobile phone from the port town of Eyl. “We will treat every country as they treat us.”

The pirates' threat raises fears for the safety of some 230 foreign sailors still held hostage in more than a dozen ships anchored off lawless Somalia.
The US President has weighed in, promising to “ halt the rise of piracy in that region” with the help of multinational forces.

No doubt, this will be played out in the media, but what few people realize is the impact on shipping costs in added insurance, extra fuel for longer routes, less cargo and now, hired security forces to provide armed escorts to tankers.
