Welcome to Sail-World.Com's USA newsletter for 18 May 2009.

The defending champion, Quantum Racing (USA) has finished fourth in the first round of the 60 race Audi MedCup in Alicante, Spain.

Just four points separated the top four boats, and like last year, consistency was the key. Louis Vuitton Cup winners, Emirates Team New Zealand have yet to learn this lesson. Competing for the first time on the circuit, they won two races, but also carried 6,7, 10 placings.

Quantum Racing's worst place was a seventh, and she won last year with an average placing of fourth. In this edition we have a full analysis of the racing over the weekend, including plenty of screen shots of the critical points of the racing courtesy of Virtual Eye.

The fog came down on Saturday for the start of Leg 7 of the Volvo Ocean Race in Boston. On this leg they head across the Atlantic to Galway in Ireland. In this edition of Sail-World.com's newsletter we have plenty of images and reports of the start and early stages of the racing.

And as one Round the World fleet leaves, another arrives. In this edition of Sail-World, we feature reports and images from the finish of thePortiamo Global OceanRace in Charleston

And don't forget to catch the story about the Race Officer who cancelled because of the sea-state rather than the wind conditions. Too often after the cancellation of an event because of weather conditions or forecast, we hear grizzles from sailors to the effect that racing could have/should have taken place. This story, with the benefit of hindsight puts those sort of views in a different perspective.

All is relatively quiet on the America's Cup front. It would seem that the parties are getting on with the business of preparing for a match in early February 2010, after which the rest of the teams wanting to sail in the event can put their heads down and get on with preparations for the next event, about 15 months later. Sail-World does have the transcript of the last Supreme Court hearing and will be putting this into a publishable form during the week.
