Flying a storm jib, Jeremy Salvesen and David Thomson hammer across the Charleston finish line in 30 knots Portimao Global Ocean Race
Welcome to Sail-World.Com's USA newsletter for 20 May 2009.
Today's issue is dominated by international news, as the Volvo Ocean Race starts a sleigh ride across the Atlantic to Ireland. This stretch of water is dominated by weather systems launched from the Newfoundland coast and much-sought by yachts attempting to break speed records and the Trans-Atlantic speed record it self.
The Volvo Ocean race fleet is about to be hit by one of these, which will give the seven yachts a slingshot ride across the Atlantic. Courtesy of PredictWind we have a story and images tracking the development and progress of one of these systems.
Prognosis at noon on 22 May (NZT) showing the Volvo Ocean Race fleet sailing in winds in excess of 25kts in the clutches of the wind system expected to dominate the leg for the Volvo Ocean Race fleet on Leg 7 from Boston to Ireland. PredictWind/Expedition
Courtesy of the routing program Expedition we can show in the same images the effect these systems have on optimum routes. If you ever wondered about why the fastest course between two points is not usually a straight line, read this story - maybe you'll also understand why the skippers and navigators spend so much time below decks looking at screens and working out their options and strategies.

On the America's Cup front, all is rather quiet, as the parties prepare for a Match in February 2010. In this issue we have extracts from the transcript of the Hearing on 14 May, and a link to the full document. While Court proceedings are tedious to many, this transcript is interesting because of the cut and thrust between the parties and Justice Shirley Kornreich.
The other point of interest in the proceedings was the fact that for the first time in the 1988 Mercury Bay & San Diego saga and this current legal contretemps, that there has been an immediate ruling from the Bench. That maybe indicates that there is little scope for legal delay, given that the issues between the parties are now rather limited. Come 15 February 2010, the sailing world should be ready to move in a new direction with the America's Cup. And God knows we need it!
