Sail-World USA - 27 June 2009

PUMA Ocean Racing, skippered by Ken Read (USA) finish second on leg 10 in St Petersburg, crossing the line at 00:42:48 GMT  Yongtao Jiang
Welcome to Sail-World.Com's USA newsletter for 27 June 2009.

In St Petersburg, Russia, the final notes in the Volvo Ocean Race have been played. While some may have reservations about the course, number of entries and overall challenge of the event compared to the four leg adventure/challenge/race of the early Whitbread events such as the third edition which attracted 29 entries compared to the present seven or eight.

However this race is now a heavily commercial affair, where success is gauged in terms of numbers passing through race villages, internet page views and television hours.

In contrast to the last race, where all but two of the competitors did at least one leg on a truck or a ship, this race has not been too bad and has certainly set a good platform on which to advance the event to another level, albeit with less stopovers and a more traditional course. The next edition starts in 2011, and must look very attractive to many of the professional racing teams currently doing bench time waiting for the America's Cup to be put back on the rails.

PUMA Ocean Racing finish the final Leg 10 of the VOR 08-09 in St Petersburg in 2nd place, clinching the position of second overall in the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09
  Sally Collison/PUMA Ocean Racing

USA's Puma Racing performed very well in this event to take second overall, and with that position pretty well in the bag after the Telefonica Blue mishap at the start of Leg 9. While that event all but secured the position for Puma Racing, Read and his merry men performed well in the latter half of the race particularly, being very consistent and getting more than their fair share of the points available.

Read's last email is a classic.
