Sail-World USA: 3 August 2009

International 420 Class World Championship - Lake Garda  Gianni Tomazzoni
Welcome Sail-World.Com's USA newsletter for 3 August 2009

The 2009 Star Worlds are underway in Swede. USA's Mark Mendelblatt and Mark Strube. lie in third place after two races had been completed. We featuring daily reports on www.sail-world.com so stay tuned for the daily updates.

As we reported in the last edition, then in the closing stages of the most dramatic match races ever seen, two massive French trimarans, have broken the old Trans Atlantic record. Groupama 3 (Franck Cammas) took on the longer Banque Populaire - which started two and a half hours behind, and caught up to be level pegging for most of the way.

Groupama 3 set one world 24 hour record, only to have Banque Populaire set a new one almost immediately on 907 nautical miles.

In this edition we feature regular reports from Groupama 3 plus don't forget to catch four YouTube video of Banque Populaire hoofing it across the Atlantic.

No real news on the America's Cup scene, save for very strong rumours that the America's Cup will be staged in United Arab Emirates and specifically Ras al-Khaimah - a 70nm boat ride from the Iranian coast, or just 30nm as the proverbial crow flies. The official announcement will be made on 6 August. Around the same time, weather permitting, Alinghi 5 will be attempting the airlift from le Bouveret SUI to Genoa, ITA - a distance of some 170 miles, and going to a height, we believe. of 8,000ft.

No further news on whether BMW Oracle will Appeal last Friday's decision on the use of the engine, they have 30 days in which to do so. However it was pointed out to Sail-World by one Cup rules authority, that if one read the Deed of Gift carefully, it said that ONLY the Challenger had to be propelled by sails, and by omission the Defender could be propelled by a motor. However we don't think that will happen!

Neville Crichton's Alfa Romeo leads the start at Copa del Rey, Palma, Mallorca, Spain.  MCC McCamp

This America's Cup is certainly headed into the Theater of the Absurd, with a Defending Club, having won the Cup with just a single Swiss national abroad in a crew of 17, landlocked and a long way from an 'arm of the sea' and with their home waters being a lake; electing to Defend the America's Cup in United Arab Emirates, using multihulls, in a Deed of Gift Match, with the use of engines allowed!

Good sailing!
