Sail-World USA: 30 August 2009

Martin/Nelson (l.) shadow rivals Holt/Smit into the rabbit start line - 2009 SAP 505 Worlds  Rich Roberts ©
Welcome Sail-World.Com's USA newsletter for 30 August 2009

Another very short editorial..

Mike Martin and Jeff Nelson (USA) have won the 2009 SAP 505 World Championship, with a second US crew in the runner up slot. All told, six US crews finished in the top ten overall, including a solid performance from Howie Hamlin and Paul Cayard to finish seventh overall in the 98 boat event.

As always there are some great stories from within the series and the class, and the 505 class seems to attract these characters. In this edition we have featured race reports images and the class stories which help set aside International class racing from their counterparts in the Olympic classes.

In this issue we have the first in a two part commentary on issues expected to be raised in the next round of the America's Cup to be contested in the New York Supreme Court.

Our expectation is that this particular legal episode could have some far reaching consequences. Certainly we expect the legal heat to be turned up, not down. The primary concern has to be any shift of the dates for the 33rd America's Cup past 8th February 2010, which would severely impact the ability to stage the next event in 2011, meaning 2013 would be the next available date.

In this issue we conclude our coverage of Hamilton Island Race Week, the 470 Worlds in Denmark and the carnage from the iShares Cup in Kiel, Germany.

Stay tuned to www.sail-world.com

Good sailing!
