Sail-World USA: 23 September 2009

Pedro Sardina looks at the Volvo Ocean Race, America's Cup and trends in professional sailing generally  Volvo Ocean Race ©
Welcome Sail-World.Com's USA newsletter for 23 September 2009

America's Cup legal action takes centre stage again in this edition, with the determination of the Customs House Registry issue, by Justice Shirley Kornreich in the New York Supreme Court.

In her decision she covers a lot of ground, in a very readable review. In this issue we have featured the two very different reactions of the two warring parties, and also feature an analysis on the Decision and the Rules issue, expected to be raised.

This Decision is just the scene setter for another legal motion which will focus on the rules to be used in the regatta, an action into which the International Sailing Federation has been led by Societe Nautique de Geneve.

In this action, the agreement with the International Sailing Federation is expected to be closely scrutinised, and it is difficult to see how that agreement can be sustained. But that is a matter for the Courts to determine, not us - although several are having their say in our America's Cup e-Mailbag.

There has been no official response by the International Sailing Federation to the Louis Vuitton World Series, with the first event scheduled to get underway off Nice in France in just six weeks time. We understand that a crucial meeting will take place next week between the Louis Vuitton Word Series and the World Match Racing Tour. In this issue we feature an interview with Peter Gilmour, the acting President for the World Tour.

That same group, World Match Racing Tour has changed hands, and we feature that story in this issue.

Staying with professional racing, winner of the last Volvo Ocean Race, Ericsson, have announced that they will not be entering the 2010/11 event. We have that story in this edition, along with reflections from Ericsson 3's bowman Martin Krite three months after the race finished. There is expected to be the announcement of the first entry for the next edition of the round the world race, next week. Meanwhile Pedro Sardina, a top Spanish sailing journalist gives his views on the Volvo Ocean Race, the America's Cup and the professional sailing scene, generally.

The 12 Metres are back in Newport again, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the class being used for the America's Cup, in this edition we have images and reports from the first day of racing. Same for the Melges 32's which have started their World Championship in Porto Cervo.
