Sail-World USA : 18 October 2009

Dubai Traditional 43 ft Dhow Sailing Championships   Dubai International Marine Club
Welcome Sail-World.Com's US newsletter for 18 October 2009

This edition of Sail-World is dominated by America's Cup news, with an Open Day being held in the proposed venue, Ras al-Khaimah, UAE, and in New York, the papers continue to flow with two actions underway and a third pending. Over in San Diego, the US Challenger is in the final stages of preparation after a set of month long modifications.

From the images and reports it is obvious that the UAE venue is literally being hacked out of sand and sea. Whether this is the best venue for the America's Cup, is a matter of personal opinion. History will judge how Ras al-Khaimah sits alongside the previous venues of Newport, Fremantle, San Diego, Auckland and Valencia.

Alinghi 5 flies a hull off Ras al-Khaimah - practice day 16 October 2009  Guido Trombetta/Team Alinghi

In this edition, we have the introduction by ValenciaSailing.com!www.valenciasailing.com who took the time to travel to RAK. Again, form your own opinion after reading their comprehensive reports with images of venue progress.

The issue of the role of the America's Cup Trustee may well be tested in the US Courts. Over the weekend another letter was filed by Golden Gate YC, by the redoubtable David Boies, acting for Golden Gate YC.

And back in Ras al-Khamah, Ernesto Bertarelli has given his take on the matter with media interviews, and is reported in this edition.

Media conference - Open Day - Ras al-Khaimah - Not your usual crowd  Guido Trombetta/Team Alinghi

Quite where this mess is headed, is anyone's guess. But certainly positions seem to be hardening ahead of the next round of Hearings in the New York Supreme Court on 27 October.

The Australia II design controversy continues with another of the sailing world's top journalists, Barry Pickthall (formerly of The Times of London) writing and quoting from his interview notes at the time. Barry gives an interesting perspective, as always.

On the sailing front, the Rolex Middle Sea Race got underway from Malta, yesterday morning, local time. The coverage of this event from the official website is superb - particularly the tracking system employed. The historic port formed an imposing backdrop as the fleet got away in light airs. Today (overnight, local time) they have been pushed along with a very willing breeze, which has taken its toll. At this stage, the record set two years ago is in the hands of the wind gods and ICAP Leopard (GBR). The story from PredictWind.com forecast the conditions accurately, and gives you some information to overlay on the course and tracking maps for the event.

You can submit your event/regatta/class/boat news by Clicking Here - all copy will be published, please include a photo or three with a side over 1200px long. There's a new big icon on the home page of www.sail-world.com to make it even easier for you.

Many thanks for your help and input, we're here to help sailing, and help those who wish to help themselves.

Good sailing!
