Editorial, December 23, '09.

Compliments of the season to all. ... Welcome to another edition of Powerboat-World and again we've plenty to create interest and cause some gossip around the famous water cooler.

A quick apology to start with – I mentioned last week of a planned series on advice for first time boat buyers. Well, it's underway, but not quite ready. It will be done as promised.

More to the point, we preview the approaching Miami International Boat Show, largest and most important exhibition staged by America's National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and for those who have never visited south Florida, we publish an overall view of the two cities involved, that's right, two cities, Miami and Miami Beach.

I always look forward to the show and there's another reason this year, the link between two great names, Cigarette Racing Team and Mercedes AMG.

Also, while many still feel great sorrow for the recent loss of two offshore powerboat racing competitors, there has been some uninformed (from non-boating media) comment on the dangers of powerboat racing. Feel free to comment on my thoughts.

Those gorgeous Pegiva boats built on the Queensland Gold Coast have had a ‘gallop' across Sydney Harbour and we've got the images to show you right here.

Of course, while we powerboaters don't wish to seem too impressed all the action on and around Sydney-Harbour this week involves Rushcutters Bay, the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and -the Rolex Sydney-Hobart.

Early indications suggest the fleet, numbering more than 100 is likely to encounter some challenging weather conditions. If you going to be on the water in your powerboat, do be careful.

We wish them a safe voyage. Be assured the coverage will be first class in our sister publication www.sail-world.com

Finally, only two sleeps, as they say, to the big day, December 25 – may your Christmas be a merry one filled with joy (and lots of good presents!) and may 2010 bring all further happiness and success.

God bless,

Bob Wonders

Offshore powerboat racing ‘too dangerous'?
Bob Wonders,
Uninformed comment has even suggested the sport should be banned! Of course, I'm not suggesting the sport is not dangerous; there is certainly an element of risk, just as there is in a score of other pursuits, such as Formula 1, V8 Supercars, Moto GP, stock car racing, speedway, drag racing (cars and boats), circuit and flat bottom boat racing just to name those which come quickly to mind....
