Welcome to Sail-World Canada

The Florida Sailing Scene is Heating Up!

The end of the Toronto International Boat Show usually coincides with the beginning of the racing season in Florida; fortunately, the local temperature is also heating up to more seasonal conditions. Key West Race Week is now underway and the US Sailing's 2010 Rolex Miami OCR is scheduled for next week. Last Thursday also saw the conclusion of the first winter event in Florida, when a record number of entries completed the uncharacteristically cold SORC Ft. Lauderdale to Key West offshore race.

Racers were greeted by perfect sailing conditions; sunny skies, warm weather and a good breeze appeared on cue for Key West Race Week. KWRW is attracting a wide variety of competitors from multis, PHRF and IRC yachts racing in handicap classes to fleets of J/80, J/105, Melges 24 and 32, and Farr 40. Stay tuned for more reporting from Key West soon!

More than 640 sailors from 44 countries are registered for US Sailing's 2010 Rolex Miami OCR to date, proving its prominence as a must-sail event for Olympic and Paralympic class sailors. The entry list, which has surpassed last year's numbers, has quickly become a who's who of Olympic and Paralympic medalists and world champions. This major international event is scheduled to start on Saturday, January 24th.

Most of he Clipper Round the World Race fleet is in Singapore by now, Canada's Cape Breton Island taking line honors for the first time in the event. Unfortunately, this last leg didn't go without incident; the crew of Cork, the Irish entry, hit a rock near the island of Gosong Mampango in the Java Sea, 200 miles northeast of Jakarta, last Wednesday. The stranded sailors abandoned the stricken yacht in life rafts and headed for nearby rocks where they were picked up by two competing yachts, the California Clipper and Team Finland. All of those on board the Cork Clipper are reported to be safe and well.

We'll soon be turning our attention towards Valencia, Spain for the 33rd America's Cup; the Defender and the Challenger yachts are currently being dialed in for the Mediterranean conditions.
