Water safety warning, All Marine Spares prospers, Abu Dhabi prepares
Happy Australia Day for yesterday my fellow Aussies and we extend to our international readers the salutation, opportunity to raise a glass or two and urge you to join in the spirit of the celebration! It was a national holiday for most DownUnder, and with hot summer weather, people flocked to the beaches, lakes and waterways in droves.
With a spate of drownings to ring in the New Year, swimmers, fishermen and boaties are being urged to stick to patrolled beaches, enjoy your pastime with mates and wear PFDs when out on a boat. The Australian Surf Life Saving Association, one of the world's pioneers when it comes to water safety, reports a 35% increase in rescues this season. These volunteers are stretched to the limit with tourists and visitors and have issued a set of 'Surf Safe' guidelines for everybody hitting the water - equally relevant in Australia, Abu Dhabi, Auckland or Arlington!
This week we profile an industry stalwart, supplier to the trade - All Marine Spares. Along with consistent marketing and retaining stock during the downturn, this multi-million dollar enterprise stuck with the strategy of person-to-person service. MD Leigh Francis reveals a little of why the company has survived and prospered and is now 'screaming along' in to 2010.
Of international import, Riviera's receivers announce a Deed of Company arrangement, spelling good news for current and former employees awaiting entitlements, and hinting at a buyer for the company in the not too distant future.
There's a heady mix of new products launched, boat show updates, some positive signs that people are returning to boating in the US, Australia and Europe, and a few promotions offering an interesting array of prizes.
That's all for now. Keep sending us your news, comments and suggestions.
