All eyes are turning south this week as the Louis Vuitton Trophy kicks off in Auckland. All the big names are there – except BMW Oracle and Alinghi – and we can expect the competition to be just as edgy as it was last time in Auckland, and in Nice. And hopefully just as good-natured. You can watch it all on Sail-World thanks to our arrangement with SailTV. Our good friends over at Scuttlebutt are running a reader poll asking whether Larry Ellison should drop the present court cases vs Alinghi/SNG concerning Breach of Fiduciary Duty and Constructed in Country. At present the overwhelming majority say ‘No', and are suggesting that the former defender of the America's Cup be hung out to dry. Some are even suggesting having a go at the SNG ‘mutineers'. Interesting. Groupama is sill hanging on to her lead in the attempt on the Jules Verne Trophy, but it's turning out to be a tough trip up the Atlantic, and it's going to be a squeak at the finish line. But look behind you – the L'Hydroptere programme is starting to build ocean-going editions of the record-breaking trimaran, with a view to circling the globe on 40 days. It seems like only five minutes ago that we were all thinking that 80 days was a tough call... what would Jules Verne have to say about that?
The Moth Worlds are presently running in Dubai – that's ‘Asia' by ISAF demarcation. And the regatta with the infinitely variable dates, the Borneo International Yachting Challenge, has announced dates. This is the only regatta we know that actually pays people to turn up – draw your own conclusions.
