No apologies if this looks like a Top of the Gulf newsletter - it is. It's been a grand four days at Jomtien Beach, Thailand, so we are happy to talk about it. Ray Roberts and the crew of Evolution Racing went all the way to the last race to beat Matt Allen and the Whispering Spies-y for the Overall title, and the Coronation Cup (Platus) was also decided by the last race of the last day - well done the Ferreteers.

Read on, and catch up.

Guy Nowell, Editor.

Top of the Gulf Regatta 2010 - handing out the silverware
Guy Nowell, Sail-World Asia,
Closing night at the Top of the Gulf Regatta, time to put on the dancing shoes and the sharp suit, mix with the glitterati and enjoy the balmy tropical breezes wafting in from the Gulf of Thailand (that's the 'Gulf' in 'Top of the Gulf' of course).... [more]

Top of the Gulf Regatta 2010 - down to the wire on the last day
Guy Nowell, Sail-World Asia,
In the end, it all came down to the last race for the IRC Racing class today, with Evolution Racing (Ray Roberts) and Ichi Ban (Matt Allen) going in to the last day with 4 and 7 points respectively, after ‘drops'. Ichi Ban threw everything into the first two windward-leeward races, won them both and dragged the score back level. The last race for the series was the re-sail of Saturday's race 2... [more]

Top of the Gulf 2010 - another day, another breeze.
Guy Nowell, Sail-World Asia,
There is one race on the card outstanding for the IRC Racing class since race 1 was abandoned on Saturday in the aftermath of the ‘2 vs 7' continental error. RO Jerry Rollin took a straw poll over the radio, but one boat demurred so the ‘re-sail' is deferred until tomorrow. Maybe.... [more]

Top of the Gulf Regatta, bobbing around with the Oppies
Guy Nowell, Sail-World Asia,
On the way back from the Big Boats' race course today we stopped off at the Oppie race area. Amazing. Dozens – no, hundreds! 129 to be exact – of little boats bobbing about all over the place, all heading in different directions, and all being helmed by small sailors in a markedly nonchalant manner.... Top of the Gulf 2010- AY Race Report 2
AsianYachting.com,
The weather conditions played a big part in determining the results today. In Race 1 if you chose the right hand side you became a hero and consequently the left side turned out a zero. After the bulk of the fleet got away on Race 2 the breeze did a complete 180' shift turning the windward leg into a run. The black threatening storm clouds overland descended onto the course... Top of the Gulf 2010 – patience, and shuffle the cards
Guy Nowell, Sail-World Asia,
The ‘cats and dogs' dealt out a seriously mixed hand at Top of the Gulf today, with dying breeze, filling breeze, 100 deg windshifts, 180 deg windshifts, a blown start, boats flying spinnakers opposite directions on the same leg of the course and a cut-off time that went out the window. Guaranteed to raise the stress level of the most phlegmatic Race Officer.... [more]

Top of the Gulf 2010 - challenging winds and challenging racing
TOTG Media,
The light winds and directional changes made for a leisurely start line for all classes on Race 1. The wind died even further at the top mark to fill in later on the last leg to the finish line. The second race saw another light start for many classes and the Platu class was delayed until the wind picked up. As a storm worked its way towards the start line and brought the wind with it...... Top of the Gulf – musical chairs on the results sheet
Guy Nowell, Sail-World Asia,
The 6th edition of the Top of the Gulf Regatta at Ocean Marina, Pattaya, Thailand, started today in cooking hot sunshine. Blue skies overhead made it all look good for the 51 starters on the big boat entry list, and there was plenty enough breeze to ruffle the waters off Jomtien Beach. The regatta attracts a mixed fleet of keelboats and multihulls, and also includes beach cats and... [more]

Jessica Watson: Keeping the Record Straight

Richard Gladwell,
The Media Conference next week in Rome is now expected to set the timelines and procedure for the consultative process, which will be a forerunner to the Protocol and opening of the entry window for the 34th America's Cup.
