Sail-World New Zealand: 9 July 2010

Adam Minoprio (NZL) ETNZBlackMatch Racing - Stena Match Cup Sweden  Loris von Siebenthal
Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 9 July 2010

News in Thursday evening (NZT) is that all other US venues have been excused from further consideration.

The move is a little hard to read but from sources outside the official reports, it seems that at least two European venues are still under consideration.

Quite why that is the case is something of a mystery, aside from maybe being a negotiating ploy to maintain the action and get very firm commitments from City Hall, in San Francisco.

It seems incredible that having won the America's Cup, that European options would be seriously in the mix, when Golden Gate Yacht Club is entitled to sail it in their home waters, in front of a home crowd, and in a venue that seems to have breeze on demand.

For New Zealand's perspective the date is probably more important than the venue. The Kiwis came within an ace of winning the 32nd Cup in Valencia under difficult conditions. However the possibility of a 2013 Match date does run a little close with the 2011/12 Volvo Ocean Race - despite the two Volvo OR and America's Cup programs being separately managed, with only the design team shared.

We have more images of the replica schooner Atlantic, being commissioned in La Rochelle. It seems incredible that her record, could have stood for 75 years. Her construction is also faithfully recorded on her website, which is a very interesting browse.

Peter Burling and Blair Tuke - 49er European Championships, Poland

We only have scant reports from the 49er Europeans in Poland, however it would seem that the New Zealand crew are just outside the top ten after three days of racing. We'll post any updates as they come to hand on www.sail-world.com. We'll also be updating on the latest from the World Match Racing Tour in Sweden.

Remember, if your event PR person is not yet sending news and images to Sail-World.com, please gently point out the submit banner on the top of the news on every single page on our site.
