Sail-World New Zealand: 17 August 2010

Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 17 August 2010

After the frenetic action at the Skandia Sail For Gold, last week, in England, we move to sunny Queensland this week for the Meridien Marinas Airlie Beach Race Week, in which several top New Zealand yachts are competing.

We feature several background stories from the regatta in this edition, along with photo galleries and race reports.

One of the features of the next Volvo Ocean Race will be the Legends Regatta, in which many of the yachts which have competed in previous Whitbread Round the World races and Volvo Ocean Races, will participate. And, their old crews will be able 'reunionise' - to remember the good times and talk about the tough days.

Just to keep the record honest, in this edition we feature a story republished from www.volvooceanrace.com, from one of the crew aboard the winner of the original race, Sayula II from Mexico.

It's an interesting contrast to the current times of freeze dried food, water makers and satellite phones.

Sail-World has donated a large America's Cup print for auction, with the proceeds going to the four beneficiaries of a charity run, now underway, from Auckland to Wellington.

Measuring 1.2 metres by 850mm the image of what became the signature moment of the 33rd America's Cup is a unique shot - which was not easily obtained, as media boats would not venture the 25nm out from the Valencia coast to the race start area.

The image is listed on Trademe, with the auction closing in just over a week. The first bid met the reserve price - and now you have the opportunity to own a striking and unique image from a sailing event, the likes of which the world will probably and hopefully never see again.

One of the difficulties with the 33rd America's Cup was appreciating the size and scale of the boats - unless you were on the water. Large scale images do go some way to conveying the amazing spectacle - and will look great on the wall of your office, yacht club, or special room. This is a once only offering!

If you are looking for an event with which to see in the Spring, then make sure you get your tickets for the Northland Seafood Festival to be staged at Marsden Cove, in four weeks time.

We have the announcement of the event, in this edition, and what will be on offer. Sounds very tempting and with some great entertainment laid on to go with the outstanding Northland seafood.

At Sail-World, we have changed our submission system so that you can load images and stories in the one frame. The change is a big improvement and we have been using it ourselves for story and image compilation - very simple. One of the features of the system is that you get an automated acknowledgment when the story is put online together with a link and advice as to which world regions the story has been posted.

Thanks for your help and input, we're here to help sailing, and help those who wish to help themselves.

Good sailing!
