Sail-World New Zealand: 10 September 2010

Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 10 September 2010

Two New Zealand sailing teams report in from the opening day of the Danish Open, sailed not surprisingly in Denmark. Sailed in very fresh breezes, the crash and burn action stole the show - with a spectacular broach, an Olympic Gold medalist taking a swim and action aplenty.

Check out the report from BlackMatch and the video of THAT broach. Remember with video from YouTube, you can wind up the setting to 720dpi - which will give you near TV quality video. It will take a little while to download, so the trick is start it running, grab a cup of tea or coffee, and when you get back, hit replay and it will run through without any stop/start.

Look for the 360 icon at the bottom right hand corner of the screen, to see the quality of video that is available.

Staying with video, don't miss the gallery we have put together from Rick Deppe of PUMA Racing in the last Volvo Ocean Race. Deppe has been appointed MCM Manager for the next Volvo - which in plain English stands for Media Crew Member manager, meaning that he will be coaching and mentoring the MCM's aboard each of the entries in the 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race. For all the talk we get about what is going to happen in sailing, it is refreshing to revisit some of the great sailing action from the last edition of the round the world classic.

A view of the proposed racing area in San Francisco for the 34th America's Cup  .. .

On Monday night at 11.00pm NZT, there will be more of what is going to happen in sailing, with the announcement of the America's Cup Protocol and Boat. Speculation is rife in sailing media circles about what is going to be announced - everyone has a theory. We have covered the background in the last couple of editions of Sail-World looking at the backdrop to the next America's Cup and the options for the Boat. Today, we look at the three Venues, and name what we believe is the preferred Italian venue.

J class, Velsheda (JK7). Race one of the Rolex Maxi Worlds. Porto Cervo, Sardinia. 6/9/2010  Chris Cameron

We have also compared the San Francisco situation with the reconstruction that was necessary in Auckland in 1995-1998. Our take is that the Venue is San Francisco's to lose. From what we have seen so far, they seem to be making a very thorough job of dropping that particular ball - typified by one statement made last weekend, which we would hope is a misquote by the local media.

At Sail-World, we have changed our submission system so that you can load images and stories in the one frame. The change is a big improvement and we have been using it ourselves for story and image compilation - very simple. One of the features of the system is that you get an automated acknowledgment when the story is put online together with a link and advice as to which world regions the story has been posted.

Good sailing!
