America's Cup - Reactions, explanations and further developments

The AC45 one design and AC72 compared.  America's Cup.com
Welcome to this second edition of Sail-World to bring you the latest information on the 34th America's Cup, announced on Monday in Valencia, Spain

The sailing world received a jolt with the announcement that a catamaran would be used for the 34th America's Cup.

Opinion is clearly divided on the merits of this move, however there is no going back and time will tell whether it was the correct one or not.

In this edition we look at reasons behind the choice of the catamaran, and the wider agendas behind the America's Cup and new World Championship circuit.

AC45 male mould under construction - BMW Oracle Racing building facility - Warkworth  Richard Gladwell

Earlier in the week, Sail-World set off for Warkworth, just north of Auckland, New Zealand - now home of BMW Oracle Racing's new boat and component manufacturing facility. The target of our visit was to get the first still images of the new AC45 under construction, however the facility itself, and what is planned for it, is even more impressive, and we have that story in this edition.

Transport logistics are believed to have played a big part in the multihull choice  .. .

Later in the week, the Regatta Director and Chief Operating Officer were named by the Defender, Golden Gate Yacht Club, to head up the fledgling America's Cup Race Management organisation, we have the official announcement and their backgrounds in this edition.

At the same time, the new America's Cup rule was announced, we have a summary of the key points in this edition, plus the link to the full rule for those who want all the detail. Essentially it is a 'Box Rule' with just some very basic limits on length, beam, wingsail dimensions, crew number and weight - and some technology constraint measures. So the AC72 boats will be diverse.

Russell Coutts explains the thinking behind the radical changes to the America's Cup competition  .. .

Following the announcement of the AC72, the Year and the Protocol, on Monday, BMW Oracle Racing's CEO, Russell Coutts conducted an international media teleconference with several international sailing journalists who were not able to be present in Valencia. We featured the audio of that session in the previous edition of Sail-World's America's Cup News. In this edition we have the full, slightly edited transcripts for easier reference and to understand the drivers behind the changes and announcements made.

Spectacle, multihull style, from the Tornado Europeans  Martina Barnetova

And of course we have our readers' emails received following the announcements, as the 85,000 subscribers to this newsletter, plus our regular website audience of several times that figure, comment on the events of last Monday.

Who said monohulls weren't spectacular?  .. .

From here on we will be covering the America's Cup news and issues in our regular Sail-World newsletters and website www.sail-world.com

Stay tuned!

Good sailing!
