Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 27 September 2010
Emirates Team New Zealand have cemented their place as the world's top professional sailing team with a successful defence of the Audi MedCup Trophy for 2010.
We have full coverage of the regatta in this edition including some great images from the final day. Sadly most venues seem to produce either too much wind or too little, and Cagliari (ITA) proved to be no different - with no wind on the penultimate day, plus only one race was possible on the final day.
On the other side of the excitement coin, we have plenty of reports and images from the Extreme 40's being sailed not too far away at Trapani (ITA). Again there is plenty of high octane action in the fresh breeze.
Are monohulls or multihulls more exciting to watch - you be the judge - there is a very fair basis of comparison in this edition of Sail-World.
The regatta was the last for Emirates Team NZ, NZL-380 has been sold to an Australian owner. From here the team will sail in the America's Cup Class for one last time in the Louis Vuitton Trophy series in Dubai in November. After which there is an uncertain future, aside from the Camper entry in the Volvo Ocean Race, with the team maybe switching to Extreme 40's, sailing on other multihulls or similar exercises. There is no announcement yet of the actual venues for the three regattas to be held in the AC45 class for next year.
In the Melges 32 Worlds, the New Zealand crew, despite a promising opening day has fallen out of the top ten overall. Again we have daily reports and plenty of images in this edition - and more on how sailing in San Francisco could be portrayed if it were selected as an America's Cup venue.

Also dropping out of the top ten is the NZL Sailing Team who are competing in the Womens World Championships in New York. Following a couple of very close races and decisions, they were unable to make it past the repechage phase - we have reports from the team on each day of racing.
