Sail-World New Zealand: 13 October 2010

Emirates Team NZ digs a bow in during the Extreme 40 series in Spain.  Paul Wyeth / OC Events
Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 13 October 2010

Emirates Team NZ have completed their first and final Extreme 40 round for 2010 in Almeria, Spain - not their best result, but against experienced Extreme 40 crews, and racing inside the harbour for much of the event, it was a great learning experience in the grander scheme of America's Cup life.

We have reports, video and images from the event which provided some spectacular photo opportunities, as they say in political circles.

From here the team look forward to a last regatta in the America's Cup monohulls, at the Louis Vuitton Trophy series in Dubai.

A final decision has yet to be made on whether they will challenge for the 34th America's Cup, for which entries open in just over a couple of weeks time.

With New Zealand experiencing anything but tropical weather, at present, there is a good opportunity to check out another boat show. The Waikato Boat, Fishing and Leisure Show is a joint venture between the NZ Marine Industry Association and Mystery Creek Events Centre, and is being staged this Friday, saturday and Sunday.

The show gets underway on Friday 15 October and runs to Sunday 17 October at Mystery Creek Events Centre, Hamilton.

See the latest gear at the Waikato Boat, Fishing and Leisure Show  .. .

Gates open 10am to 5pm, admission $12 adults, 14 year olds and under free. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or online at www.waikatoboatshow.co.nz.

There's details of a great competition you can enter at the show, in this edition.

Entries and opinion continues to roll in on the America's Cup. Currently we have had 800 responses and there's still plenty of time for you to have your say on the developments. /75526 to vent your spleen, or make constructive comment, or just click your responses to the questions - and have the chance to win a Musto fleece.

In this edition we have the final report on the penultimate event on the World Match Racing Tour, which was both the final outing for Ben Ainslie, TeamOrigin, and a vital opportunity for Black Match Racing to up the ante in their quest to defend their World Match Racing title. Quite where things are headed for TeamOrigin is uncertain. While they have announced that they are not going to enter the 34th America's Cup, it seems hard to believe that with all their infrastructure and talent that they will simply shut up shop and fade away. Hopefully they will continue to compete on the world's racing circuits and will be in a position to stay at that level, or go up to an America's Cup in 2017.

Last hurrah for TeamOrigin? Ben Ainslie (L) and his team after winning the Argo Group Gold Cup 2010. Hamilton, Bermuda. 10 October 2010.   Subzero Images /WMRT

Thanks for your help and input, we're here to help sailing, and help those who wish to help themselves.

Good sailing!
