Less than five days to La Route du Rhum

In Saint-Malo, France, 86 skippers from ten different nations are set to compete in five different classes in the ninth edition of La Route du Rhum - La Banque Postale; they have all been in town since last Friday, as per the event rules and Saint-Malo is just buzzing with pre-race activities. The ten days leading up to the 2006 race saw over 1.2 million visitors taking in all the action from dockside; this week, many of them are back for a first hand view of the Ultime multihulls taking part in the race for the first time. In comparison to the previous ORMA 60's, four of these sailing machines are gigantic: Oman Air Majan and Sodebo at 32m, Groupama 3 at 31.5m and IDEC at 29.7m. The big question is how much will they slice off the previous race record of 7 days, 17 minutes. The nine strong IMOCA Open 60 Class will see a number of familiar names with Vincent Riou, Jean-Pierre Dick and Michel Desjoyaux showcasing brand new yachts for this race. Less than five days before the gun on Sunday, October 31st at 1:00pm (local time).

The Velux 5 Oceans skippers on their ECO 60 have been served with many challenges over the past week; it all started with lack of wind through the Bay of Biscay and they are now facing confused seas as the front runners enter the trade winds west of the Cape Verde Islands. Brad Van Liew is ahead again after various leader changes earlier in the week, followed closely by Gutek and Derek Hatfield. Derek is the only one who has not reported getting knocked down, getting hurt or sustaining boat and sail damage; even Christophe Bullen, who just restarted the race on Sunday after his re-qualifying in a new boat, is suffering major electrical problems on Five Smiles of Smiles. Touch wood, Derek!... unfortunately, I doubt there is much wood for Derek to touch on activehouse.info. Christopher Stanmore-Major is stuck in light air close to shore; I can relate to his frustration as I selected a similar route in the Virtual Regatta on-line game.

Challenging conditions appear to prevail in the Mediterranean for the Rolex Middle Sea Race, another 'classic' in offshore circles. The big boats have already completed the race course, a 600 nm circumnavigation of the island of Sicily that originates and ends in Malta; ICAP Leopard arrived last night at 2200, three and a half hours behind line honors winner, Esimit Europa 2. The overall handicap winner is still up for grabs with several contenders still racing towards the finish.

Locally, Canadian Olympic Sailing Team member, Tyler Bjorn was awarded the Sailor of the Year trophy by the Quebec Sailing Federation at its recent 40th Anniversary Gala in Montreal. The same night saw the induction of Evert Bastet into the Quebec Sailing Federation Hall of Fame.

See you soon!
