Rolex Sydney Hobart - Tried winning and losing, winning is better

Immediately following the 2009 Rolex Sydney to Hobart Mark Richards, the skipper of Bob Oatley's 30 metre super maxi Wild oats XI explained that they had been under done going into their fifth tilt at the line honours title, in which they were beaten by Neville Crichton's Alfa Romeo, and they would not make that mistake again.

Bob Oatley's supermaxi Wild Oats XI   Andrea Francolini

The SOLAS Big Boat Challenge display yesterday on Sydney Harbour showed that Oatley's team is much better prepared this year and will start as a strong line honours favourite.

After the 2009 Hobart she made a rapid turn-around from Hobart to rush north to Sydney to make the start line for the 2010 Pittwater to Coffs Harbour race and took line honours.

Oats XI took line honours in a hard 2010 Audi Sydney Offshore Newcastle Yacht Race and the light weather 2010 Audi Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race – finishing outside the race record by only a few hours.

In this year's Sydney to Hobart race there is a rather special group of sporting stars who share Richards conclusions that winning is better than losing.

Sailing south on Sean Langman and Anthony Bell's super maxi Investec Loyal is a group of Australian sporting royalty.

Former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden, Olympic swimmer Geoff Huegill and surfing icon Layne Beachley, boxer Danny Green and Rugby Union legends Phil Waugh and Phil Kearns, will be heading south on Loyal.

The New Zealand built Elliott 30 metre has had a chequered history but obviously has significant potential. She has been out of the water until very recently but now has new electronics and a complete new North Sails wardrobe as well as a new paint job. However she's definitely short of time on the water.

You'd have to be forgiven for thinking that Langman and his core crew of top name sailors; tactician Michael Coxon, crew boss Peter ‘Billy' Merrington, pitman Anthony Nossiter, mast man Will McCarthy and bow Morgan White will be aiming to get the boat to Hobart safely with that precious sporting cargo, rather than risking all to beat Oats XI.

Queenslander Grant Wharington's Wild Thing does not appear to be a line honours threat either unless conditions are very heavy. She has been de-powered and IRC optimised ready for a big boat weather wind and a potential Tattersall's Cup handicap win.

While Mark Richards believes given the right conditions, with their taller rig, larger sail area and crew depth Investec Loyal 'will be a handful', you can bet Richards, Oatley and crew have no intention of letting anyone past Oats XI on Boxing Day and in the subsequent 24-36-40 hours.
