Barcelona World Race countdown and all the latest sailing news

Welcome to this week's edition of our Sail-World.com's UK newsletter.

While the UK shivers in the grip of freezing cold over in Europe the crews for the Barcelona World Race are on countdown for the start on December 31st.

Drama today for Alex Thomson, his race is now in doubt after an emergency operation. The only all female crew, Dee Caffari and her co-skipper Anna Corbella (GAES Centros Auditivos) are looking forward to the race.

Sail-World.com will bring you the action as it unfolds.

Chris Stanmore-Major is battling on in the Velux 5 Oceans race. American sailor Brad Van Liew crossed first through the speed gate on leg 2.

And in the Southern Hemisphere the Rolex Sydney Hobart was full of drama, with retirements, protests and heavy weather all adding to the excitement.

Niklas Zennstrom's 72 footer Ran survived a protest from the Race Committee regarding its radio. Yesterday the protest was dismissed. We are going to be talking to RKJ and the Royal Imperial Poona crew members on Titania of Cowes, they were tired and emotional when they went to bed around 6am. They had a very eventful ride. Read all about it on Sail-World.com

We have a dedicated newsletter for the Sydney Hobart event and you will receive all the news via the front end of our Sail-World.com website.
