Welcome to Sail-World Canada

Congratulations to Canadian Rolex Sailor of the Year Frederik Eaton!

Although the 2010 Canadian Rolex Sailor of the Year Awards Banquet is set for later in February, Frederik Eaton, the 2010 recipient has been announced today. The Canadian Rolex Sailor of the Year event is the premier opportunity for Canadians to recognize the achievements and successes of Canadian sailors; you can attend this exclusive event set for Saturday, February 26th, 2011 at The Carlu in Toronto, Ontario and have an opportunity to mingle with Olympic medalists, World Champions and keynote address speaker, US Sailing Presiden,t Gary Jobson. Purchase your tickets early; seating is limited!

In the Barcelona World Race, Michel Desjoyaux and François Gabart on Foncia were forced into retirement after the top portion of their mast breaking on them two days ago. They were trailing Virbac-Paprec 3, who had just regained the lead, at the time. Fortunately, no one is hurt and they were able to sail to South Africa under a reefed main alone. This race keeps getting better and better... It will be interesting to see whether the leader slows down to spare the boat, or whether they will keep pushing strongly into the Indian Ocean; the rest of the fleet is at least a full day behind. Another twist that should keep everyone on their toes is the presence of icebergs; the South Atlantic gates were moved North last week as a safety measure and the race committee has just announced new waypoints due to the proliferation of icebergs and floating ice in the Indian Ocean. This course change will keep the fleet almost 400nm further North than the traditional route and will make for a much longer course.

In Wellington, NZ, the Velux 5 Oceans fleet is getting ready for the start of the 5800 miles Sprint 3 to Punta del Este, Uruguay, scheduled for February 6th where the challenge of rounding notorious Cape Horn awaits them. Back in South Africa, Christophe Bullens is finalizing repairs on Five Oceans of Smile Too and plans to leave in early February and head for Punta Del Este, where he will join the rest of the fleet. He will sail along with Brad, Derek, Gutek and Chris and accompany them to Charleston and La Rochelle. Christophe plans to sail the two last legs of the race as a training opportunity for the next Velux 5 Oceans race.

After five days at sea and nearing the Equator, Pascal Bidégorry on Banque Populaire V, is leading the record holder's reference course by approximately 200 miles, and this despite lighter conditions over the past 48 hours. The crew of fourteen did manage to maintain a freight train pace earlier this week with top speeds in excess of 40 knots at time. In France, after a short delay, Thomas Coville is now considering leaving the dock in Brest on Saturday to take advantage of a suitable weather window. Coville and the trimaran Sodebo will be chasing the solo round-the-world record of 57 days currently held by Francis Joyon. More details on the two phenomenal speed machines next week.

Half-way through the US Sailing Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta, amongst a fleet of 716 sailors representing 53 nations, our Canadian Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls are performing well. After seven races, Bjorn and Clarke are in third place in the Star class while Allan Leibel is leading a group of five Canadians in the top twelve 2.4mR's. In the 49er's, Lowden and Cook are in fourth, closely trailed by the Hogan/Gooderham team while on the RS:X windsurfers, Zachary Plavsic and Nikola Girke are fifth and sixth respectively, in the men and women divisions. The week long event wraps up on Saturday; full results at http://rmocr.ussailing.org/2011/Results.htm

Offshore racers will not want to miss the 'Around the World Alone' feature on the CBC Documentary channel on Monday, February 6th. A production of Wind Athletes Canada, the film relates the fascinating events of the 2008 Vendée Globe race. Non racers will also appreciate the drama and exploits from the decks of the Open 60's.

All the best!
