For The Record - Sailing News from the U.S. and Beyond
American Brad Van Liew has always enjoyed the respect and admiration due a great sailor, but he has now made history as the first Yank to sail solo around Cape Horn three times. Van Liew is currently leading the fleet of four Eco 60s around the world in the Velux 5 Oceans Race, an event he has dominated since the first few days of Ocean Sprint One. 'It's been a lot of years since I was down here last and it was really a very special moment,' said Van Liew. 'It was pretty emotional. I'm going to remember it forever.
'It's a very small band of people who have been round Cape Horn solo three times and I am very proud to be one of them, it's a remarkable feeling.' Hats off to Van Liew for this proud achievement, and be sure to check out our coverage of the Velux 5 Oceans Race, in this issue.
Also offshore, but in far saner conditions, George David's Ramber 100 (formerly Speedboat), a Juan K-designed speed machine, is on pace to break the course record in this year's RORC's Caribbean 600. This record was set in 2009 by Mike Slade's Leopard, a Farr designed super-maxi that's also 100 feet; interestingly, Leopard is currently astern of Rambler 100, giving chase. Read more about this Bucket List event (mine at least!) inside this issue.
Inshore, the Extreme Sailing Series is currently taking place in Muscat, Oman, with world-class multi-hull sailors and AC34 hopefuls doing battle in Extreme 40 catamarans. 'We had a brilliant day on the water today,' said Terry Hutchinson, skipper of Artemis Racing, 'there were a lot of people on the shore line – close enough to hear them cheering on the finish line. I have never experienced something like that before. It was a first!' Check out the reports inside, and aim your mouse for Carlo Borlenghi's great image gallery of the event.
Speaking of the Cup, dates have now been announced for the 2011 and early 2012 America's Cup World Series events. Thus far, dates for eight regattas have been announced, and final venue bids are currently under review. 'We are incredibly pleased with the potential choices we have before us, with venues that offer the kind of up-close action that fans want to see,' said Richard Worth, Chairman of the America's Cup Event Authority. 'We are finalizing our slate now.
We feel very confident that each America's Cup World Series event will be first-class, creating a real foundation for future editions of the circuit.' More inside, and also be sure to check out Paul Cayard's (Artemis Racing) account of the unfortunate accident involving the capsize of the prototype AC45 in New Zealand, which occurred earlier this week.
Jean and Scott Adam pose beside their yacht Quest in happier times .. .
And finally, in non-racing news, the four American cruisers who were hijacked aboard Quest, their Davidson 58, off the coast of Somalia over the weekend have been killed, according to a report from the U.S. Central Command. The sailors, Scott and Jean Adam, and Phyllis Macay and Bob Riggle were part of the Blue Water Rally, but peeled off for Salallah, Oman, by themselves last week. According to news sources, the U.S. Navy is currently holding more than a dozen captured pirates aboard the aircraft carrier Enterprise.
May the four winds blow you safely home.
