Welcome to Sail-World Canada

Photo finish in the Velux 5 Oceans!

After 6700 miles and 25 days at sea, Polish skipper Zbigniew 'Gutek' Gutkowski stole second place from British skipper Chris Stanmore-Major by a mere 40 seconds; the closest ever finish in solo ocean racing story. Canadian Derek Hatfield completed Sprint 3 just over an hour later after being plagued with electrical problems on board Active House. The skippers are enjoying some rest in Uruguay before the start of Sprint 4 that will take them north to Charleston, SC on March 27th.

Virbac-Paprec3 and MAPFRE, the two leading yachts in the Barcelona World race, will soon be crossing their own Southern Atlantic track as they enjoy a lead of approximately 1200 miles over Renault Z.E. and Neutrogena, the third and fourth position yachts. back in seventh place, Kito de Pavant and Sebastien Audigane have notified race organizers of possible keel problems on Groupe Bel and are heading to Ushuaia in Argentina to asses the situation. Most of the fleet has now safely rounded Cape Horn.

Thomas Coville on board Sodebo has been lagging behind in his fastest solo sailor record attempt is quite possibly back in the chase after sailing in more favorable weather conditions for the past few days. He has just rounded Cape Horn and finds himself with a little over 600 miles to make up on Francis Joyon record time; a fast crossing of the St. Helena high in the southern Atlantic is the next challenge.

The racing season looks promising for Canadian sailors with the announcement of major North American regattas being held in Canada this year. The popular Beneteau First 36.7 North American Championships and the IRC North American Championships will be in Toronto this summer. Stay tuned for more announcements! Don't hesitate to share your events.

Finally, don't forget that Ontario Sailing is now accepting nominations for this year's Ontario Sailing's Legend of Ontario Sailors Award presented by Canadian Yachting Magazine. The award recognizes outstanding contribution to the recreational and/or competitive sport of sailing in Canada.

All the best!
