Welcome to Sail-World Canada

Busy racing season ahead!

The 2010-11 edition of the Velux 5 Oceans race is over, with American Brad Van Liew winning top honors after nine months of action. Derek Hatfield becomes the first Canadian to have raced twice around the world; he completed his first circumnavigation in the 2002-3 edition of the Velux 5 Oceans, then called the Around Alone Race. Derek was looking to complete some unfinished business after an abrupt end to his 2008 Vendee Globe attempt; he can now relax, feeling a sense of accomplishment. In La Rochelle, event chair, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston has already commented that the Eco 60 class is here to stay and racing will be back in 2014.

Alternating years with the Bermuda 1-2, the 18th biennial edition of Bermuda Ocean Race is set to go for 2012. In the meantime, the focus is on the Bermuda 1-2 where Canadian Diane Reid is crossing the start line by herself later today on her Mini 6.5. You can follow her progress to Bermuda at http://www.bermuda1-2.org/.

Congratulations to Canadian sailing team member, Zac Plavsic, who walk away from the Delta Lloyd Regatta with silver around his neck. The Canadian team is now taking a break ahead of their next major event at the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta. The event is being held at the 2012 Olympics sailing venue in Weymouth, UK and will serve to test the upgraded facilities, ahead of the 2012 London games.

Offshore racers on the west coast took part in the Swiftsure International Yacht Race last week-end. Hosted by the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, the event offers racing for everyone with four different courses, some that require overnight racing. Although light winds prevailed, most enjoyed the event. Race results are available on their official website at http://www.swiftsure.org/

The New York Yacht Club 2011 Invitational Race is back on for this summer. Newport's NYYC facility will host 22 yacht club teams, representing 16 nations from six different continents who will be racing on identical NYYC Swan 42's on Rhode Island Sound and Narragansett Bay from September 10 to 17, 2011. The Royal Canadian Yacht Club will be representing Canada and the team, led once again by Terry McLaughlin, will race on RCYC's John Hele's Swan 42 Daring. John will be on-board as tactician. You can follow their training at http://teamrcyc.com/ as the take on the World!

I will be on the race committee boat tonight as we wave off over 90 yachts participating in the annual Susan Hood Trophy Race. Stay tuned for dock side interviews and photos from the water.

Finally, la belle province is hosting over 50 entries at the upcoming 2011 Shark Worlds at the Beaconsfield Yacht Club, just minutes from downtown Montreal. The event is being held on beautiful Lake St-Louis, which will likely provide excellent conditions for this world class event. All the details at http://www.sharkworlds2011.com/

Fair winds, see you on the start line soon!
