Transatlantic Bound—Sailing News from the U.S. and Beyond

Start 1, Sunday, June 26 off of Castle Hill in Newport, Rhode Island. - Transatlantic Race 2011  Amory Ross / Transatlantic Race 2011

For the fortunate few who are racing in this year's Transatlantic race, these are exciting times. The race is sailed pursuit style, with the fastest boats—including the Maltese Falcon and the new Gunboat 66, Phaedo—starting today. Anyone lucky enough to be in Newport Harbor will be in for quite a show during the starting sequences, as some of the world's most impressive sailing hardware winds up for what promises to be one of the great yacht races of the year.

As for the boats that have already started, here's the onboard report from Dawn Star: 'Dawn broke slowly as the fog we've become accustomed to engulfed us once again. The wind grew extremely light and we ghosted along in our own gray bubble; as best we could tell, the edge of the world was only one hundred feet away in all directions. If the world had been flat, we could easily have sailed right off the edge without ever seeing it.' Be sure to check the website for updates as they become available, and also be sure to check out all of the great Transatlantic-related media, in this issue.

Pegasus - Transpacific Yacht Race

Meanwhile, on the West Coast, our most fabled distance race—the Transpacific Yacht Race—has announced that the race will use an intentional six-hour delay in reporting positions...at least until the lead monohull gets within 100 miles of the finishing line at Diamond Head—then all boats go 'live'. The reason? Tactics and strategy. 'The Transpac has a long history as a race in which navigation matters,' said world-class navigator Stan Honey. 'Using a six-hour delay for the first part of the Transpac recognizes and honors that history. Switching to real-time reports as the first monohull crosses the mark of 100 miles to the finish makes logistics easier for family members and for Honolulu committee members. It will add to the excitement of the finish.' For more information on this, and to find out more about why other big distance races might consider a similar move, be sure to check out Kimball Livingston's piece, in this issue.

Cup junkies are advised to pay attention to Jimmy Spithill's interview with Michelle Slade to learn more about what it's like to be an AC skipper. VOR addicts: The biggest news from this race is that VOR legend Mike Sanderson is back in the race with a new team and a new (old) boat, Sanya Lan (formerly Telefonica Blue). Find out the full scoop inside.

And speaking of super cool races featuring super-cool boats (and you know that Transpac and the Transatlantic will both feature plenty of sleds), be sure to have a gander at Ingrid Abbery's image gallery from the Superyacht Cup 2011. Caveat emptor: if you do don't own a superyacht, this image gallery will certainly foster the desire... And since we're already talking about cool images of cool boats, also be sure to check out Dan Armstrong's gallery of Puma Ocean Racing's new mar mostro out sailing.

May the four winds blow you safely home,

David Schmidt, Sail-World USA Editor
