Sail-World New Zealand: 25 November 2011

2011 Entrant - Rikki (Ray Haslar RP42) - 2011 (Not) Round White Island Race  Lesley Haslar
Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 25 November 2011

Two New Zealand teams sit on top of the points table going into the quarter finals (top eight) in the Monsoon Cup being sailed in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia, using yachts from Bakewell-White Yacht Design, who are also lead designers for the Korean America's Cup Team.

For both New Zealand teams it is a remarkable story.

Full Metal Jacket, skippered by Will Tiller, only won entry into the regatta through qualifying via the Asian Match Racing Championship. Now they are sitting on top of the pile of the biggest names in match racing, with eight wins to their credit.

Waka Racing, skippered by Phil Robertson, got away to a very slow start in the series, but recovered fantastically to also have eight wins, and are second overall.

We have reports on all the racing in this edition of Sail-World.com's newsletter

The Volvo Ocean Race is in the final stages of the first leg with the winner expected to finish within 36 hours (from 0100 NZT on 26 November).

In this edition we feature reports from Camper sailed by Emirates Team NZ. Don't miss the latest story which feature audio, video, a report, still images and a graphic. Five media elements all in the one story - certainly a multi media experience.

In just a week, the ISAF World Sailing Championships get underway in Perth, Western Australia. This regatta is the main Olympic Selection regatta - with 75% of the places for the 2012 Olympics being allocated in Perth. The rest will be decided in various class championships staged in Europe in the first few months of 2012.

We will be running full coverage of this event in Sail-World.

The New Zealand 470 crews have performed well in the Australian Open 470 Championships in the ISAF World Championships venue, with Paul Snow-Hansen and Jason Saunders placing second in a good quality fleet - winning two races. Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie were second womens crew, pulled down by a couple of poor places. But they excelled themselves in penultimate race - finishing second in the open fleet and beating the current world mens champion crew!

If you are in the Tauranga area over the weekend, take the time to check out the Clipper Round the World Race fleet, which is on a stopover having sailed in from Geraldton, Western Australia on a 3,800nm leg. The fleet is in the Tauranga Bridge Marina for 10 days.
