Volvo closeness, Sail for Gold, Melges 20 and more now sailing news



Teams are preparing for the next In-Port races, in what has become the closest edition of the Volvo Ocean Race yet sailed.

The Sail for Gold Regatta is underway in Weymouth, the Europa Warm-Up second stage from Cascais to La Rochelle, concluded with victory going to Vincent Riou (PRB) ahead of François Gabart (Macif).

Victory to Pecceré (Mirko De Falco/Guglielmo Giordano) in the second leg of the Audi Melges 20 Sailing Series, while the Melges 24 Goblin 3 took the Bosphorus Cup.

Noumea Race: Beau Geste would have taken a minute to sink says skipper

In an interview with Radio New Zealand, Beau Geste skipper Gavin Brady has compared the 80ft Farr design to being close to doing a 'OneAustralia' after the yacht sustained damage in the Sail Noumea 2012 race. Speaking from Norfolk Island where the yacht is anchored an awaiting assessment, Brady said that she was close to sinking, and they were advised to get off the boat by the designer.... [more]

Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta - Massive win for Caleb Paine on day 1

On the first day of the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta, it was a difficult day on Weymouth's waters. But Caleb Paine (USA) made it look easy with a massive win from Aleksey Selivanov (RUS) and Mark Andrews (GBR) in the only race sailed. Racing didn't actually get under way until 16.30 as the early morning northerly clocked and dropped shortly after the fleet got away for race one at around 11.30.... [more]

Laser Europa Cup 2012 Dutch Act was held from 1st to 3rd June on the Ijssel-Meer. On day one of racing first in the small Laser Standard fleet was Maxime Mazard FRA, followed by Jules Ferrer FRA. 2200hrs: The 80ft Farr design Beau Geste has withdrawn from the Evolution Sails Sail Noumea 2012 race with structural damage, which is later reported as continuing to deteriorate.
