Sail-World New Zealand: May 29, 2013 - Fun and games in San Fran

The America's Cup has got back into gear in San Francisco, with the first sailings for Challengers Luna Rossa and Emirates Team New Zealand, and the Defender Oracle Team USA has resumed sailing.
So far there is no answer to the question as to who is the fastest. We have been analysing video as much as anyone and have some ideas as to where the teams are strong, and not so good. But it is a work in progress.
In this edition we have published the videos that seem to be available on the interweb. The ones we pay most attention to are the Am-Cam ones - because they show long sailing sequences without heavy editing, which are a feature of the teams' videos which are produced to sell the sizzle rather than the steak.
Similarly with images from both amateur and team sources.
Currently the teams and Regatta Director, Iain Murray are working through the Recommendations produced by Murray in his role as Chairman of the Review Committee set up after the Artemis fatality.
The bulk of the Recommendations should go through as changes to improve safety. However some are curious, including one which overturns a Measurement Interpretation. We have details in this newsletter edition of Sail-World.com.
On the local scene we have the latest information from the Auckland to Bluff Race, which is gaining momentum. So far there are eight inquiries or entries, with four of those coming from Australia.
Most significant of the Australian entries/enquiries is that of Sean Langman in the ORMA 60, Team Australia. The 60ft multihull, to the same rule as the well known TeamVodafoneSailing can potentially add some real interest to the race, particularly if she is joined by other large multihulls.

Surprisingly large multihulls are still not allowed to race alongside the monohull fleets in several of the major Australian offshore events, and potentially the Auckland to Bluff Race could develop into the serious, and very spectacular offshore multihull event of the Southern Hemisphere.
The announcement that the Auckland to Bluff Race will share its start with the Two man Round the North Island Race, is another sound move - with a fleet of up to 60 boats expected to cross the start line in 255 days time on February 9, 2014.

Also in the story is a video interview Grant Dalton, one of New Zealand's top trans-oceanic racers, making the point that New Zealand needs a race like the A2B if we are to continue to produce top Volvo Ocean Race sailors, and sailors who can take that experience into the America's Cup and other professional sailing circuits.
This weekend the Auckland to Fiji Race gets underway which could be a shoot out between TeamVodafoneSailing and the top TP52, V5.
The New Zealand Sailing Team have turned in a very encouraging performance in Medemblik, in The Netherlands, with three medals from the EuroSAF Champions Sailing Cup, a circuit put together by the regional European Sailing body to preserve their regattas after the International Sailing Federation restructured the World Sailing Cup, to make it more regionally based. In simple terms that meant removing some European regattas from the circuit.
The EuroSAF Cup is very well supported by European sailors, and these fleets were generally very competitive.
Against that backdrop the performance of the New Zealand Sailing Team was very impressive. Remember too, the fact that some of our top crews did not compete - and winning three medals against that backdrop is impressive.
Don't wear the line that this is an off-Olympic year.
All top crews have to turn in top performances at their world championships to retain their funding for the next year - and this regatta, the Delta Lloyd, was used by many crews who had a layoff following the 2012 Olympics, to come back up to speed going into the 2013 World Championship round.
While conditions at Rio for the 2016 Olympics are a very unknown quantity at this stage, the performances in this very crucial first year of the Olympic cycle, point to a substantial improvement on the 2012 Olympic result for New Zealand sailors.
