Sail-World New Zealand: August 21, 2013 - Three races down

Racing, such as it is, in the Final of the Louis Vuitton Cup continues to dominate the sailing news.

With three races completed in the regatta to find the Challenger to meet the Defender in the Match for the 34th America's Cup, to date, there has been only one finisher. Luna Rossa has scored two DNF's and Emirates Team NZ a DSQ after suffering a complete power failure.

Few would disagree that the racing in this phase of the regatta has been a huge disappointment. Maybe that will change - all would certainly hope that will be the case.

While the action on the water has been found wanting, unfortunately the minds of the International Jury are being exercised far too much as they work through a slew of case-work.

Having a Jury playing such a dominant role in a regatta is never a good look - they should neither be seen nor heard if all is going well.

We have covered the major case being handled by the International Jury in this edition. Unfortunately a matter which seemed to be minor has been allowed to get completely out hand. Now that the Jury's investigation phase is complete, the parties are now on a rules escalator - from which there can be little deviation. Certainly the time for creative thinking is past, and matters will take their course.

A new protest alleging Luna Rossa and Emirates Team NZ were engaged in some form of illegal surveillance activity involving the Oracle Team USA AC45's has been lodged and will be held in the morning.

We take a quick look at that in this edition of Sail-World.com.

In other sailing news we cover the Weta Regatta sailed in Santa Barbara, over the weekend. No New Zealand boats competed but the Regatta underlines the success of the Weta which has had 900 boats built and is expanding into all the major sailing areas.

One of the keys to success for any class is the number of uses that it has - and the Weta certainly holds a strong hand in this regard - being used from everything from Learn to Sail (they are part of Yachting NZ's Sailing Have a Go program) to singlehanded racing, as well as more conventional racing and cruising.

Zeus Touch 7 features touch technology   Navico

B&G have announced a new range of navigational hardware, with the new Zeus touch screen series available in three sizes - in 7', 8' and 12' displays.

We feature technical summary on the new line in this edition of Sail-World. an impressive feature of the range is the high resolution screens, which show detail very clearly, along with the now-expected touchscreen technology which first came into vogue with the Apple iPhone and similar devices, and has now become part of marine technology and instrumentation.

One of the great things about touch screens is that they seem to lower the geek level, whenever it is used, with people now happy to just touch and see what happens, and if that doesn't work touch something else. the whole process becomes quite intuitive.

We also feature a video created from one of AEE's Action cameras hung from the masthead of one of the competitors on Saturday's RNZYS Winter Series - which shows a competitor doing a Chinese gybe and breaking a spinnaker pole.

In the same race the Sail-World team also ran a couple of Optrix waterproof iPhone cases off the stern rail of top Auckland racer V5, and captured some outstanding video using a pair of iPhones.

One of the great features about the cases are the lens fitted where the iPhone camera is located. This enables you to get a much better image that would normally be the case with an iPhone, which tend to 'fish-eye' the image somewhat.

The accessories that are available with the Optrix are also very impressive, enabling the case to be secured directly onto the rail - and more importantly able to be whipped off quickly if things turn to custard.

There are special apps available with the iphone which will allow you to video a race, and have that synchonised with a GPS track.

Much has been made of Emirates Team NZ's use of cameras for crew training etc. It is now very easy and cost effective to do the same using the AEE Action cam's and Optrix cases to review what really goes on.

Of course they can be used when cruising too, and make some great home videos - which can be easily transmitted to friends and family anywhere.
