Hearings, Worlds and OD reports—Sailing news from the U.S. and beyond



While it's unknown as to what penalties the team may potentially face, things could get ugly at a crucial time for Oracle and for the 34th America's Cup, which starts on September 7. Stay tuned to the website for more news from Thursday's hearing, as it becomes known.

Also in San Francisco but in monohull circles, news hit today that the HPR (High Performance Rule) National Championships is taking place as part of the St. Francis Yacht Club's fabled Big Boat Series (September 26-29). HPR racing will feature current-generation raceboats such as Carkeek 40's, Botin 40's, MC 38's and Farr 400's, as well as proven older-generation designs.

On the East Coast, the Byte CII Worlds are taking place at Sail Newport, in Newport, Rhode Island, where junior sailors are enjoying great times and spectacular sailing. In addition to being the class' Worlds, the regatta is also an Open Qualifier for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games, which are being held in Nanjing, China. The Farr 40 Worlds are also taking place in Newport, where a talented and experienced fleet of sailors has experienced great conditions (after a postponement for light airs) on their first day of racing. According to reports, the RC managed to rifle-off three races, with Nico Poons's 'Mon' toping the leaderboard, followed by Helmut Jahn's 'Flash Gordon 6' and Kevin McNeil's 'Nightshift'. Racing continues through Friday, so stay tuned for the latest news, as it unfurls.

And in Olympic Class circles, the Finn Gold Cup happening in Tallinn, Estonia, where sailors have been negotiating light winds and an extremely deep talent pool. 'Another tricky day,' reported current race leader Andrew Mills (GBR). 'Light winds [are] not traditionally what I am good at but I seem to be doing OK here. But it's a long way to go, with seven races left.' More, inside.
