Welcome to Sail-World Canada
VOR65, Mini-Transat and other Canadian sailing news!
The much anticipated start of the 2013 Mini-Transat event has been postponed; skippers have completed their safety briefings, boats have been inspected, sails and provisions were being stowed in preparation for the Sunday start but a large low pressure system off the Bay of Biscay would put the entire fleet of 84 at risk by the time they reach Cape Finisterre. The race committee, in consultation with the race participants, has delayed the start and is now waiting for a better weather window. Canadian Diane Reid and American Jeffrey MacFarlane, the only North Americans registered in the 2013 biannual 4000 mile race will join other skippers and pay attention to weather forecast and remain hopeful for a Monday start.
Check out the latest images of the first Volvo 65, SCA Team, out on sea trials in the English Channel; the all-female crew is getting a leg up on the competition with less than a year to the Alicante, Spain Volvo Ocean Race start in October 2014. Always popular, solo racer Samantha Davies is one of the seven confirmed SCA Team sailors; she still can hardly believe she will be participating in a childhood dream as a Volvo Ocean Race crew member.
Olympic classes action is on the menu this week in La Rochelle, France for the Semaine Olympique Française (French Olympic Sailing Week) where veterans get to show the way to many new Olympic hopefuls. New events, including the mixed-crew Nacra 17 where Volvo Ocean Race winner and Jules Verne Trophy record breaker Frank Cammas is confident it's never too late to participate in the Olympics; Cammas, who is now 40, and crew Sophie de Turckheim at 32 are likely to be a serious threat to younger sailors. Sail-World has a team in France to bring you stories and pictures!
Laser Radial racers are in small numbers in La Rochelle since the class has just recently competed in the 2013 Radial Women's World Championships in China where Vancouver's Isabella Bertold sailed to a World Championships personal best, finishing seventh overall ahead of London Olympic medal winners. The road to Rio looks promising; congratulations Isabella!
At the Clipper 2013-14 Round the World Yacht Race, Skipper Chris Hollis and his PSP Logistics team have been celebrating their first place in Race 2 from France to Brazil by taking in the Rio de Janeiro sights in between boat chores as crews get ready for the start of Race 3 that will take them across the Southern Atlantic to Cape Town, South Africa.
