Sail-World New Zealand: November 1, 2013 - The Week that Was
Due to a combination of technical upgrades, and spending the long weekend and early part of the week in an internet free area we missed producing our regular newsletter for earlier this week.
The PIC Coastal Classic last Friday, was much as forecast by Predictwind – headwinds for much of the race, and the course routing function of Predictwind was accurate for the three finishing times of the ORMA60. Volvo 70 and TP52.
That's an indication of a few things. First Predictwind got its forecast right a couple of days before the race. Second the standard polars used by Predictwind to predict performance are pretty accurate. Third the Routing function is accurate. And fourth, the lead boats sailed a very accurate and fast course in the conditions.
As an aside, after the Day 10 of the America's Cup, when the race overran the 40 minute time-limit, it took us less than five minutes to use the Predictwind routing function, with the standard AC72 polar to work out that a wind strength of at least 9kts was required to complete the course within the time limit. Pity that didn't happen earlier, but we digress.
All told the Coastal Classic was an excellent race with a real quality field. No records were broken – but that should not detract from the interest and intensity of the race.

Read is more recently known as the skipper of Puma from the last Volvo Ocean Race. The current edition, due to start in October 2014, announced its third entry yesterday, joining Team SCA, and Abu Dhabi. The latest entry is from China, but perhaps more significant is its backing for the ground-breaking British based sports company OC Sports – which now has a portfolio of several very significant events including the Extreme Sailing Series. You can find out more at www.ocsport.com. Not clear is how many Chinese nationals will be aboard or involved in the campaign which is backed by Dongfeng Commercial Vehicles. OC Sport will be seeing other sponsors to share the exposure.

Staying with the Volvo Ocean Race, we have another video interview story from the all women's team, Team SCA, answering the question of whether the women can compete with the men in the 39,000nm round the world race.
