Sail-World New Zealand: April 12, 2014 - As good as it gets?

Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visit Emirates Team New Zealand to match race each other on version 5 America's Cup Yachts NZL41 and NZL68.  Chris Cameron/ETNZ©
Welcome to Sail-World.com New Zealand for April 12, 2014

On Friday afternoon, another chapter was written in sailing history with two members of the Royal family helming in a match racing event.

And what made the day doubly special, was that they were husband and wife.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge charmed their fans ashore, and turned in a sailing spectacle on the water – all captured by a massive international media contingent, and with images and stories sent around the world.

As many commented on the water it was publicity that just could not be bought, other than by a combination of circumstances unique to Auckland – a pair of America's Cup yachts, in Emirates Team NZ livery; an America's Cup team; the RNZYS Youth program to bolster the crews; and the absolutely stunning Viaduct Harbour in downtown Auckland.

We take a lot for granted in the Auckland sailing scene, but yesterday made many people realise just how special it is.

The Royals charmed the fans ashore and afloat. Their patronage did Emirates Team New Zealand no harm either, allowing the crowd to embrace the home Team once again. And without Team New Zealand, and their legacy to NZ, the whole afternoon would not have been possible.

See it for yourself in the great video produced by Emirates Team NZ in this edition.

The bonhomie generated by the occasion and Royal encounter, was followed by an interesting interview on the prime time Campbell Live show, where several of the questions that have been lurking in the public mind were put to skipper Dean Barker and CEO, Grant Dalton.

We feature that interview in this edition.

The decision by Yachting New Zealand not to take any further action against Andrew Walker and Matt Mitchell has had some reverberations internationally.

Predictably Oracle Team USA is pleased with the YNZ decision, and CEO Russell Coutts has said so on his Facebook page.

The five times America's Cup winner did not waste the opportunity to have a crack at the International Sailing Federation, and its current administration in particular.

Many will wonder why Coutts made the comments he did. But it would seem that all is not as it should be between the America's Cup Defender and the World Body.

Again, we have Sir Russell's comments in this edition.

Just after the Royal Match Race had finished a school party out sailing on the NZ Sailing Trust's Steinlager 2, came through the spectator fleet.

Seeing Big Red coming up the Waitemata sailed largely by a group of school kids, with some adult assistance was a great sight.

It's one of those situations where even a good picture doesn't do justice to the occasion. Again we are reminded how fortunate Sailing is in New Zealand to have had some people with the vision and their hearts in the right place, to make the most of an opportunity that presents itself, and create something that adds to New Zealand's rich sailing legacy.

We take it too much for granted.

Good sailing!
