Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand e-magazine for July 7, 2014

In just a month's time entries will close for the 35th America's Cup.

At present it is just a one-Challenger show - the Hamilton Island YC are the only Club to have announced, along with the Defender.

Several teams are on the chocks, with Luna Rossa (ITA) already sailing their foiling AC45. All are to yet to formalise their entries.

This situation is a real contrast compared to the previous Cup, when the second and third Challengers entered on the clock-stroke of the entries being opened.

The word we are hearing is that no-one is on a rush to enter with the Venue(s) and other event cornerstones not being announced. These include whether there will be a Qualifier series at a separate venue, and whether Challenger teams will be allowed one AC62 or two - like the Defenders. Both have a significant impact on budgets - maybe in excess of $15million.

The end of June had been denoted as the time when the venues under consideration by the Defender would be trimmed from three to two.

An embarrassing gaffe by Bermuda sources allegedly had the Premier tweeting that British Oversea Territory had made it to the final two venues. The comment was nipped in the bud with a grovelling retraction by the Royal Gazette.

A similar leak triggered the news that San Francisco had been dropped as a venue. Was it really incorrect, or had the Premier just jumped the gun ahead of the official announcement?.

Previously Bermuda announced they had received a letter confirming that they had advanced to the next stage of selection, prompting the San Franciscans to be asked if they had also received such a letter. Unfortunately it was a 'Dear John' letter in their mail from the America's Cup Event Authority.

Quite how all this unfolds remains to be seen. We'll be the first to let you know.

Last week marked the passing of another key date - 100 days until the start of the Volvo Ocean Race.

With six of the maybe seven entries announced, the Volvo Ocean Race still seems to lack the hard edge that preceded the last event.

For sure the absence of a Team New Zealand, a Groupama or a Puma leaves a big hole in the event.

The latest team - headed by Iker Martinez (ESP) looks better as the announce more crew, and we carry the latest signings with several more to come

Antonio Cuervas-Mons (bowman), Rafa Trujillo (trimmer/helmsman) Nico Lunven (navigator), will be sailing for the Spanish team on the Volvo Ocean Race.  Volvo Ocean Race©

Quite who will run the seventh boat will also be followed with interest. We have heard some rumours, and if they come to fruition, then the hole we mentioned above will be well and truly plugged.

In what remains of July the NZL Sailing Team will compete in the European Championships for the 49er and 49erFX, the Nacra 17, Mens RS:X and Mens and Women's 470.

Natalia Kosinska has finished competition in the European Women's RS:X - which was plagued by strong winds, resulting in several days being lost. Kosinska finished 12th overall.

In the other classes, New Zealand crews are current world champions in three.

The Europeans are a vital lead into the ISAF Sailing World Championships, at which all the Olympic classes will stage their 2014 World Championships. The event has attracted over 1,000 boats and 1,400 sailors from 80 nations and starts in two months time on September the 8th.

Later this week, the ISAF Youth Worlds get underway in Portugal. New Zealand has entered a full team across the eight classes and will be looking for individual success as well as a good placing in the nations point score.

The ISAF Youth Worlds have been an important first international success for several top New Zealand sailors, including Chris Dickson, Russell Coutts, Murray Jones, Dean Barker and Stuart Bannatyne. New Zealand has won 42 medals at the Youth Worlds including 15 Gold, 15 Silver and 12 Bronze.
